<<There was a woman in The X-Files fandom named Lee Burwasser who used to post quite regularly about what she saw as problems, flaws, dissappointments in the later seasons of the show. It was something she spent a lot of time on, really. And I said to her one day, "Lee, if you don't like it, walk away. Life is short. Go watch something you like." And I remembered that with a sort of sick terrible sadness when it was shared with the fandom that Lee had passed away suddenly. We all thought about those many many hours Lee spent watching and griping about TXF and how she could have been doing something pleasurable, amusing, fun, delightful, uplifting. Of course, it was Lee's right to spend her life as she wanted to, but I wonder if she had known she was going to die, if she would have done something differently. And that's the point - we don't know when our life is going to be over, so every moment should be spent realizing that we don't have any guarantees about tomorrow. >>>
I'm sorry, that is a huge assumption that she wasn't doing something fullfilling for her and without knowing the circumstances a very possibly unfair one at that.
Many times fans have situations in their RL that are out of control, that are davasting to them and it helps to have an excape or a means to channel frustration and fears into. Maybe it gave her more strength to try and change something about a TV show when she couldn't change unalterable facts in her own life. Maybe it gave her some sense of control over destiny or whatever that she could try and 'make a difference' in something that was important to her. I have a dear friend who had to undergo painful operations for a life threatening illness called breast cancer. Watching SG1 and talking about it, took her mind off the pain and helped her cope with something that might otherwise have overwhelmed her. She loved being able to have that few moments to go on the net and complain or praise or whatever struck her at the moment and made her feel better. I lost that dear friend because she lost her battle with cancer. If we don't know why something is important to someone then it should never be trivelized as 'not important' or a waste of time if it helped them.
