It's absurd that the ZPM is an absolute necessity. If the ZPM has to be removed, for whatever reason, the Odyseey's toasted.

On the other end, I can see the writers making the systems energy suckers, for the simple fact that it limits us, and makes us dependant on ZPMs, ever more. In a sense, that would be good.
