Of course, its all BS. Since it is science fiction it fun to spectulate. In princple something like the Zat might actually work. I think of it like playing with an organic synthesis scheme, which I have number of recipes I love to try but it doesnt mean they will yield product. In princple most of schemes should work.

We that you put excess amounts of energy into a molecular system it causes the system to change. Its what happen when you put a sample into mass spectrometer the sample is broken into radical species that are record in terms of abundance. Then we figure out what the sample mass and components.
