Photo from Michigan Tech's Winter Carnival of Stargate and pyramid constructed out of, well, snow, at the site.

"Created by, appropriately, the Air Force ROTC at Michigan Tech, this sculpture gets my vote as the best of the bunch. All that’s missing is either Kurt Russell or Richard Dean Anderson standing before the stargate."

        Ancient cultures a click away

Portals used to launch you, Stargate-style, to bizarre places brought to life by science fiction writers. Today, thanks to European research, portals can take you to fascinating virtual destinations – both ancient and new – and all just a click away.

They may not have been inspired by Stargate’s wormhole to alien and parallel universes, but European researchers know that today’s virtual “internauts” are just as keen to explore the world, its cultures, languages, ethnic differences and the objects that help to define who we are, or once were.

“We took note of the evolution in social networking and Web 2.0, and how society, especially the youth, uses ICT in more and more ways for work and play,” says Raphael Attias of ORT France who heads the Mosaica project which is using the latest semantic web technology to bring cultural heritage to the virtual stage.

“Mosaica was an opportunity to carve a niche in the semantic web for cultural diversity; to transfer young people’s inherent fascination for technology into a learning experience; and to galvanise communities around important topics like preserving cultural heritage.

“We’ve created a platform for playing and learning; with games as a hook for younger generations whose attention is harder to get – and keep – these days,” Attias explains.

Games like Cultural Pursuit – featuring multi-gamer functionality with different play levels to sustain interest – are built round the idea of transforming “gamers into learners” ...

Taking a bite out of 'Stargate'

          By Whitney Matheson

Today is my husband's birthday, and I wish I had the skills to bake him a cake that looked like a Cylon Raider, Neyland Stadium or the cover of a Steely Dan album. Ah, well -- maybe next year.

Pop reader Cat, on the other hand, just sampled the most spectacular pop-culture cake.

"My friend Leslie made an awesome Stargate cake for her boyfriend Evan's birthday," she says. "It was an enormous effort: She did each chevron individually and hand-painted the wormhole water in the middle of the gate. In a couple years, I bet she could give Ace of Cakes a run for their money!"

Here's a video of Leslie's creation, complete with theme music (at links above). Happy birthday, Evan!

                excerpt:

One of my favorite off-topic blogs, Jen's Cake Wrecks blog, has been mentioned here before. This time, in her "Sunday Sweets" feature devoted to cakes that definitely aren't disastrous, Jen has collected a number of Stargate-related cakes that are a joy to behold. There's even a wedding cake.

What really makes me happy about these cakes is the loving attention to detail. The watery blue event horizon, for example, comes through perfectly on the cakes that feature it. And check out the staff weapons on the ground nearby in the one pictured at right.

                  Apophis returns!

                  http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/30193410/

Exactly 20 years from today, an asteroid about the size of a 25-story building will come closer to Earth than the networks of communications satellites orbiting the planet.

The chance of an impact are extremely remote — only about 1 in 45,000 — but the asteroid, named Apophis, will be back. Analysis of the asteroid's orbit show it will return to Earth seven years later.

Astronomers don't yet know if Apophis' second visit will be a rendezvous or a collision, as its orbit will be bent by Earth's gravity during the 2029 flyby.

                    Dh400m Stargate venue nears completion

                    Published: April 30, 2009

The Stargate centre is designed as a spaceship comprising three floors covering 400,000 square feet. The top floor compromises five space domes (Earth, Mars, Saturn, Lunar and UFO), each with a range of interactive and edutainment attractions for children 4 to 14 years of age.

Dubai: Osus Facility Management, the owner and developer of Stargate, Dubai's new and unique family edutainment centre, announced that 97 per cent of construction work is complete.

The Dh400-million project took four years to build and is due to open this month. It is located in a prime area through Gate 4 of Zabeel Park. Three million visitors are expected to visit Stargate within the first year of operation alone.

‘Star Trek’ and the impact of sci-fi style

                            By Peter Gutierrez

                            Published: May 16 2009

The success of the new Star Trek film can in part be measured by the fact that no one leaves the cinema saying, “...Yes, yes – but did you see what were they wearing?” They’re too busy discussing the return of Leonard Nimoy in a cameo role as Spock and whether the new Scotty beams up better than the old one. As a result, they’re not so focused on the how the 1960s TV series has been lovingly updated by costume designer Michael Kaplan. Of course, that may be a conscious decision by the filmmakers.

Lately it has seemed that minimising the impact of fashion statements in science fiction has become a film industry goal. Who remembers the clothes in Stargate, for example? This is an interesting, if dismaying, development, since style has always mattered more in science fiction than in other genres. At times, for better or worse, it’s actually mattered more than anything else...
