"Eastwick" (Wednesday, Sept. 23, at 10 p.m. on ABC)
Though the John Updike novel "The Witches of Eastwick" was turned into a popular 1987 film, TV networks haven't had good luck adapting it. Two previous pilots never made it to air, but the third time's the charm for ABC. The show revolves around three small-town New England women (Rebecca Romijn, Lindsay Price and Jaime Ray Newman), who all find an old coin and make the same wish while throwing it into a fountain: That their lives be different. And when a mysterious stranger shows up in town one day, their lives quickly change as each of them begins to harness new powers of her own. It's an intriguing premise, but even a pilot directed by the usually deft David Nutter can't save this meandering mess. It isn't funny or campy enough for its own good. It could have been a ton of soapy fun a la "Desperate Housewives," but the pilot just feels desperate.
