    Whisperings

    * OPENING THE GATES. "Stargate SG-1" is back for a new season on the Sci Fi Channel (9 tonight) [actually -- NEXT Friday], and former Knoxville resident Ben Browder is back in the thick of the action.

Browder, who plays Lt. Colonel Cameron Mitchell, still has strong East Tennessee ties. His parents live near Johnson City, and he tells the Insider that he comes to visit them as his schedule permits.

"I would not mind catching a UT game, but first I have to visit Mom and Dad," he told the Insider.

“Psych,” 9 p.m. Friday, USA Network: Aside from “The Dead Zone” and “Medium,” I try to avoid shows — especially “reality” shows — about psychics; I consider the recent wave of cheesy programming of that ilk to be a sorry blight on the television landscape. But so, apparently, do the producers of “Psych,” who manage to send up the trend in their clever new “psychic detective” show while also charming the socks off the viewer. ... **snippage**The supporting cast is solid as well: Corbin Bernsen is good as Spencer’s cynical dad; Don S. Davis (“Stargate SG-1”) has a meaty guest role in the premiere episode; and who knew Timothy Omundson (“Judging Amy,” “Deadwood”) had such reliable comic chops? **snippage**

SG1 - Alexis Cruz (Ska'ara) - UGO: Review of "Slayer"

        From UGO (UnderGroundOnline):

        SLAYER REVIEW
        Review by Troy Rogers

        Premieres: Saturday, July 8th, 9PM
        SCI FI Channel

        Directing: B-
        Writing: B-
        Performances: B-
        Visual Appeal: A-
        Overall: B

With vampires popping up in film and TV like the recent Blade TV series or the futuristic bloodsuckers in Ultraviolet, it makes perfect sense for SCI FI Channel to add more chum to the mix. With their latest movie Slayer, SCI FI brings something new to the table with their unique spin on the vampire tale. This time, they've decided to push the envelope with "vampiros," better known as Mexican vampires!

When tactical members of the US special forces - Hawk (Casper Van Dien), Alex (Alexis Cruz) and Grieves (Kevin Grevioux) - discover vampires in the Mexican jungle, the bloodbath heats up in a cool way we don't often see on TV. During the opening melee, the battle-hardened war vets quickly discover that their heavy firepower is all but useless due to the fact that the creatures are only taken down by the old wooden–stake-through-the-heart trick - or an efficient beheading.

        **snippity doo-dah**

SCI FI scores another hit with Slayer and any horror, fantasy or sci-fi fan worth their salt should love this small-screen flick, especially with the cool caliber of talent attached to it. Come on, who doesn't love Casper Van Dien? What other network puts together classic-style horror flicks with stars from such cool movies as Starship Troopers, Stargate, Underworld and all three From Dusk Til Dawn movies?

Information on a CORIN NEMEC movie - "The American Standards":

BR company test screens first film

          By CHRIS GAUTREAU
          Advocate business writer
          Published: Jul 8, 2006

It wasn’t the flashbulbs, red carpet and glitz of Hollywood, but Baton Rouge was the scene Friday nonetheless of a movie premiere.

          **snippage**

“American Standards” was shot last fall in the Natchitoches area after Hurricane Katrina chased the production out of the Baton Rouge area. It was written and directed by Joe Wehinger.

According to a plot summary, [James] Brolin stars as Doc Jennings, whose son returns home and learns of lies, affairs and other secrets harbored by his family.

Brolin’s wife is played by Joanna Cassidy, a veteran of the “Falcon Crest” soap opera on CBS in the 1980s, while Corin Nemec, whose acting credits include big- and small-screen productions, plays their son.

Kepper said producers hope to premiere the film this fall. He said it could hit theaters or go directly to television. Brolin, who also signed on the film as an executive producer, has a deal with CBS, Kepper said.

Posted by Sam on Saturday, 8 Jul 2006

SEAN PATRICK FLANERY, who stars on the popular USA Network show “The Dead Zone” in the role of Greg Stillson, visits us this Wednesday (July 12th) for a fun interview.

Sean is one of the busiest working actors in the business. He caught movie goer’s attention as the melana-challenged star of “Powder” in 1995 and he has been steadily working ever since.

He was the Young Indiana Jones on the TV series of the same name. He stood out in his performance opposite Christopher Walken in “Suicide Kings.”

Sean has starred in a variety of SF flicks and TV shows including “Charmed,” “Stargate: SG-1,” “The Outer Limits,” and “The Twilight Zone.”

He will star in the TV production of “Savage Planet” for The Sci-Fi Channel. Sean is currently filming a big screen feature “Prisoners of the Sun” and another TV movie entitled “K.A.W.,” a scifi feature with veteran actor Rod Taylor (The Birds, The Time Machine).

                Tennessee native sticks in 'Stargate'
Browder returns for his second season, show's 10th

                By KEN BECK
                Staff Writer

You can take the boy out of Tennessee — even to other worlds — but you can't take Tennessee out of the boy.

One of the hottest stars in the science-fiction television world is one Ben Browder, born in Memphis and raised in Knoxville until beginning his school days in Charlotte, N.C.

He may not be a household name, but to sci-fi TV buffs, and you know who you are, Browder rules the universe. The 43-year-old is back for his sophomore year as Lt. Col. Cameron Mitchell on ''Stargate SG-1.'' The series, which has more staying power than ''X-Files'' or any ''Star Trek'' stepchild, blasts off into its 10th season at 8 p.m. Friday on the Sci Fi Channel.

                **major general snippage**

What are the ingredients that make ''SG-1'' so incredibly popular?

''I think that the basic premise is a good one: You have a gate that takes you anywhere else in the universe, and you walk there,'' said Browder.

''I think the show is well-done. It's not so art-driven that it's impossible for people to come into the show after eight seasons. People can come into season nine and enjoy it. They do a good job keeping the show episodic in nature. The cast? They're great. They have a good group of people working on the show.''

Previewing the 2006-07 Season, Part 25: ABC's 'Day Break'

                  By Brian Ford Sullivan

                  DAY BREAK (ABC)
                  (TBA at midseason)

The plot in a nutshell: L.A. detective Brett Hopper (Taye Diggs) wakes up next to his girlfriend Rita (Moon Bloodgood) to what he thinks will be a normal day. Sure there are some hiccups - he accidentally breaks her porcelain soap dish, he accidentally cuts himself shaving and while getting his morning coffee, he happens to save a woman (Bahar Soomekh) from being run over by an out of control bus - but the one thing he's dreading is a meeting with Internal Affairs about his potentially dirty partner Andrea Battle (Victoria Pratt). That however will turn out to be the least of his problems as he learns that an A.D.A. has been killed and he's the prime suspect, despite never having met the man. Quickly arrested, two detectives (Mitch Pileggi, Ian Anthony Dale) put the screws to him as it seems they have a murder weapon with his prints on it. And if that weren't enough, Rita's ex-husband/Hopper's ex-partner (Adam Baldwin) - now an I.A. detective - is grinning from ear to ear at the prospect of taking down Hopper. Also added to his Herculean burden - his sister Jennifer (Meta Golding) is being abused by her husband (Don Franklin); an informant (Ramon Rodriguez) from one of his cases has gone missing, his safehouse compromised; and two mysterious men seem to be filming his every move. But he's stuck in his cell, unable to do anything about any of it as his only alibi - Rita - has gone missing, having not shown up to work that day. That changes after he's kidnapped from his cell that night, roughed up by said mysterious men, taken to an abandoned quarry and told by their leader (apologies, as I didn't recognize the actor) that he needs to take the fall for the A.D.A.'s murder or they'll kill his sister. As proof, they show him a video of Rita being killed in cold blood.

                          IGN Interviews Christopher Judge

Judge talks Teal'c, Stargate SG-1's tenth season, and much more.

                          by Jason Van Horn

July 11, 2006 - True story. My father started watching Stargate: SG-1 one day when he stumbled upon it in syndication, but it was never something that appealed to me, and I actually made fun of him for even liking the show. I then sat down one day when I was bored, popped in the pilot of the DVD set he had just bought, and soon found myself watching one episode after the next. Now Stargate: SG-1 is simply a part of my television viewing habits and I can't get enough. So when I got word about an interview opportunity with Christopher Judge, obviously I was thrilled at the chance.

IGN: You filmed the 200th episode of SG-1 not too long ago, and that episode features the return of Richard Dean Anderson to the show. What was it like to have him back on the set for that landmark episode?

Christopher Judge: Oh, it was great. I think the thing we all kind of grudgingly admit is that the real star of the show is the stargate, so when it comes down to people coming and going what you miss about them is their particular personalities and the relationships that you have with them and the laughs you have had with them, and it was a hoot to have Rich back, cause he still has that same great sense of humor and it was just great to be around him and catch up, and all that stuff, and that is what I missed most about him, 'cause he is one of the funniest people I've ever met.

A special thanks to Christopher Judge for taking the time to chat with us.

Michael's role is listed as Kevin Harrison, Jonathan's school counselor and the coach of the school hockey team. Michael's character is described as "tall, attractive and low key. He has a kind heart and wants to help the mourning Jonathan. Unbeknownst to Susan, he has also suffered the death of a spouse and although she doesn’t realize it at first, he is falling for her as well as becoming very important to her son."
