SGU - Robert Carlyle - The Star: 'Stone of Destiny':

From the Toronto Star (Toronto, ON, Canada):

(Please follow the link for the complete article.)

    INTERVIEW: KATE MARA

Her role carried weight of history

For Kate Mara, the accent was on getting the burr just right to play a young heroine of the 1950s Scottish nationalist movement in Stone of Destiny ...

... Glaswegian Robert Carlyle also stars in the movie as politician John MacCormick, who inspires the students with his fiery speeches.

... Afterwards, the cast, crew and guests partied at Edinburgh Castle and saw the stone (it was officially returned by the English in 1996).

"Ian Hamilton led the way and it was so emotional. It was really fun," Mara recalled.

"Robert Carlyle was very emotional. He was tearing up. It was very sweet to see that. I'll never forget it. I felt so proud to be a part of this. I couldn't believe I got lucky enough to play a Scottish girl in this true story."

      Film shows Identity crisis

Smith's Scotland tale could easily be about this country

By Jay Stone, Canwest News Service
      February 17, 2009

      excerpt:

The details, however, are true to Glasgow. There's a scene where a boy asks a girl to dance, and Robert Carlyle -- the veteran actor who plays a Scots nationalist -- gave Smith advice on the patois of the time.

"He said 'We had a thing in those days in Glasgow. There was kind of a set pattern. You'd walk up to a girl and you'd say, 'Are you dancin'?' And she'd say, 'Are you askin'?' And then he'd say, 'I'm askin' And she'd say, 'I'm dancin'.' "

The exchange was put into the film. Smith said he asked Carlyle if it always worked. Carlyle responded, "Sometimes I'd say, 'Are you dancin'?' And I'd get...

THE scene is Glasgow Airport, and none other than Robert Carlyle is going through security on the way through to Departures.

As nearly always happens, the metal detector bleeps, and our hero - who, we should add, is in a highly jovial mood - is instructed to remove his belt.

This the bold boy duly does, spontaneously breaking out into a chorus of You Can Leave Your Hat On, in true, glorious Full Monty fashion.

We're told a couple of elderly matrons had a quick look round to see if, by any chance, the one they called The Horse was in the vicinity...

CTV Presents Timely Encore Broadcast of Original Movie MAYERTHORPE,
            February 28 at 9 p.m. ET

            - Encore presentation to air days before the four year anniversary of
            the tragic event -

            - Shawn Hennessey and Dennis Cheeseman recently sentenced for their role
in the murder of four RCMP officers by James Roszko -
            -------------------------------------------------------------------------

TORONTO, Feb. 18 /CNW/ - CTV announced today the encore presentation of
MAYERTHORPE, the 2008 Gemini Award-Winner for Best TV Movie, airing Saturday,
February 28 at 9 p.m. ET on CTV (visit CTV.ca to confirm local broadcast
times). The timely broadcast is just a few days shy of the tragedy's four year
anniversary on March 3 and comes on the heels of the recent sentencing of two
of the men involved in the heinous crime. Garnering 1.3 million total viewers
when it premiered last February(*) on CTV, MAYERTHORPE is the chilling
dramatization of the events leading up to the RCMP's greatest loss of life in
a single day, when James Roszko, a heavily-armed, habitual criminal, ambushed
and gunned down four, young RCMP officers near Mayerthorpe, AB.

On January 31, 2009, almost four years after the tragedy, an Edmonton
judge sentenced Shawn Hennessey and Dennis Cheeseman to 15 years and 12 years,
respectively, for their role in the 2005 murders of the four Alberta RCMP
officers. They admitted to driving Roszko to his farm, and supplying him with
a weapon, where he later ambushed the RCMP officers.

"It's an honour and a privilege to once again pay tribute to the RCMP
officers and their loved ones," said Susanne Boyce, President, Creative,
Content and Channels, CTV Inc. "Without valuable input from the families
during the production process this complex national tragedy could not have
            been told."

Nominated for seven 2008 Gemini Awards and winner of Best TV Movie and
Best Writing in a Dramatic Program or Mini-Series, MAYERTHORPE is the
gut-wrenching account of the years, months and days leading up to March 3,
2005 - the date well-known local criminal Jimmy Roszko murdered four RCMP
officers on his farm. The movie reveals Roszko's story, a man who terrorized
his community for years with threats and intimidation, yet somehow managed to
avoid a lengthy jail sentence despite facing numerous arrests and criminal
            charges.

The Gemini winning MAYERTHORPE examines the decade-long battle between
Roszko (Brian Markinson, Charlie Wilson's War) and the local RCMP, headed by
fictional character Corporal Alex Stanton (Henry Czerny, THE TUDORS,
FLASHPOINT). As their relationship becomes increasingly tense, the movie
hurtles towards a violent and bitter conclusion to Roszko's life of crime -
the day that many believed was inevitable.

Filmed in Calgary and the southern Alberta towns of Irricana and Cochrane
in March 2006, MAYERTHORPE also stars Diane Ladd (ALICE DOESN'T LIVE HERE
ANYMORE, WILD AT HEART) as Roszko's mother; Ben Cotton (WHISTLER, TAKEN) as
Constable Leo Johnston; Adam MacDonald (THE AUDREY HEPBURN STORY, HYSTERIA) as
Constable Peter Schiemann; Ty Olsson (MEN IN TREES, FLASH GORDON) as Constable
Brock Myrol; and Gordon Rand (THE PATH TO 9/11, EVEREST '82) as Constable
            Anthony Gordon.

MAYERTHORPE was developed and produced by SEVEN24 Films and Slanted Wheel
            Entertainment in association with CTV.

CBS AND CTV JOIN FORCES AGAIN -- THIS TIME FOR THE NEW POLICE DRAMA "THE BRIDGE"

Drama Series Pickup Follows Successful CBS/CTV Collaboration for "Flashpoint"

Series Licensed from Independent Studio E1 Entertainment
CBS Television Network and CBS Paramount Network Television have joined forces with CTV, Canada's largest privately owned English language broadcast network, for the new police drama THE BRIDGE. CBS has ordered 13 episodes of THE BRIDGE, which will be broadcast next season on the CBS Television Network in the U.S. and on CTV in Canada. CBS has licensed the series from E1 Entertainment, a Toronto-based independent production studio.

The broadcast of THE BRIDGE marks the second recent collaboration between the U.S. media company and the leading Canadian broadcaster to present a prime time television series. Last year, CBS and CTV joined forces for "Flashpoint," which was the most watched original drama in the U.S. last summer and currently wins its time period on Friday nights, boosting the year ago time period by +37% in viewers. It also currently ranks as Canada's most watched original drama series.

THE BRIDGE is inspired by the insights of veteran insider and outspoken former Toronto police union head, Craig Bromell. It's a procedural drama through the unique lens of a charismatic and dynamic union leader who is battling criminals on the street and fighting his own bosses, and sometimes corruption in the ranks, to protect his fellow officers.

THE BRIDGE was originally developed and commissioned by CTV as a two-hour movie and backdoor pilot with E1 Entertainment, 990 Multi Media Entertainment Company and Jonsworth Productions. After ordering the series in November 2008, CTV shared the pilot with top executives at CBS late last year. Going forward, these companies will produce the series in association with CTV and CBS Paramount Network Television.

"Like 'Flashpoint,' we see 'The Bridge' as a series that works creatively and financially for both our network and studio - and importantly, for CBS Television viewers," said Nancy Tellem, President, CBS Paramount Network Television Entertainment Group. "Nina [Tassler] and David [Stapf] both consider 'The Bridge' a high-quality, compelling drama that fits with the network's lineup and the studio's roster, respectively. And, we all look forward to working again with our creative partners at CTV. Together, we've already launched an exciting new show and a successful new model to deliver programming to the North American market."

"We look forward to working with our creative partners at CBS in bringing yet another great Canadian production to a North American audience," said Susanne Boyce, President, Creative, Content and Channels, CTV Inc. "Craig Bromell and Alan Di Fiore have done a beautiful job in creating a distinct and authentic view of life behind the scenes of a modern police force."
"This marks E1 Entertainment's first drama series for CBS and continues a long and successful relationship with CTV," said John Morayniss, CEO of E1 Television. "We're thrilled to be working with our partners at 990 Multi Media Entertainment Company and look forward to representing the series internationally and bringing it to audiences worldwide."

Production on THE BRIDGE is scheduled to begin in late spring in Toronto.

THE BRIDGE stars Aaron Douglas ("Battlestar Galactica," "Smallville"), Paul Popowich ("Angela's Eyes"), Inga Cadranel ("Rent-a-Goalie"), Frank Cassini ("Vice"), Theresa Joy ("All the Good Ones are Married"), Ona Grauer ("Stargate SG-1"), Michael Murphy ("X-Men: The Last Stand") and two-time Emmy Award-winner Stuart Margolin ("The Rockford Files").

THE BRIDGE is produced by E1 Entertainment, 990 Multi Media Entertainment Company and Jonsworth Productions in association with CTV and CBS Paramount Network Television.

Craig Bromell, Laszlo Barna, Adam J. Shully, Alan Di Fiore and Robert Wertheimer are executive producers. Wendy Grean is producer.

                        Rating: *** 1/2

Like Slumdog Millionaire this past fall, Stone of Destiny takes a typical
Hollywood narrative (the heist flick in this case) and transposes it to an

Real-life tale to recapture Stone of Scone a fun ride
                        By JIM SLOTEK

                        excerpt:

And director Charles Martin Smith (The Snow Walker) is in love with this
story, to the exclusion of character development. The motivation of its
                        real-life
hero, Ian Hamilton (Charlie Cox) is relegated to a few scenes of drunken angry
pub talk, where Scottish indignation is confined to grumbling about a sign in
the establishment that refers to it as being in "North Britain."

Ian's fire is perplexing, as opposed to, say, that of his mate Gavin (Stephen
McCole) who likes to get drunk and create havoc, and sees this as just a
                        nobler opportunity for same.

All around them are fatalistic what-can-you-do types, and tired erstwhile
nationalists such as John MacCormick (Robert Carlyle) who grudgingly grubstakes
our band of rebels to the tune of fifty quid.

Coming to theatres this Friday, Stone of Destiny takes a look back to 1950
when three young, Scottish nationalists tried to steal the Stone of Scone from
                        Westminster Abbey

Directed by Charles Martin Smith, Stone of Destiny stars Charlie Cox, Kate
Mara, Billy Boyd and Robert Carlyle. The cast is a good mix of actors, who all
contribute to the story, but there is no missing the film’s rather weak
                        script.
At just over an-hour-and-a-half, Stone of Destiny is not overly long, but it
drags every step of the way.

New York, NY – February 20, 2009 – SCI FI's newest original series Warehouse 13 has begun production in Toronto starring Eddie McClintock (Bones, Desperate Housewives), Joanne Kelly (The Dresden Files, Vanished) and Saul Rubinek (Blind Justice, Frasier). This new one-hour dramedy from Universal Cable Productions is slated to premiere in July 2009 with 11 episodes including the previously produced two hour pilot.

After saving the life of the President, two Secret Service agents find themselves abruptly transferred to Warehouse 13 -- a massive, top-secret storage facility in windswept South Dakota which houses every strange artifact, mysterious relic, fantastical object and supernatural souvenir ever collected by the U.S. government. The Warehouse's caretaker Artie (Rubinek) charges Pete (McClintock) and Myka (Kelly) with chasing down reports of supernatural and paranormal activity in search of new objects to cache at the Warehouse, as well as helping him to control the warehouse itself.

McClintock plays Pete Lattimer, a handsome, athletic Secret Service Agent who's impulsive, intuitive nature often leads him to leap before he looks. There is hardly a situation so dire to which he can't find the lighter side.

Kelly portrays Secret Service Agent Myka Bering, a woman born to be an agent. Organized and focused, she believes in hard work, solid planning and steadfast execution. Needless to say, it is an approach that causes conflict with Pete's off-the-cuff style.

Rubinek is Artie Nielsen, a long-time Secret Service Agent who is in charge of Warehouse 13. Enthusiastic about his work, and made a bit "eccentric" by his long tenure in the isolated warehouse, Artie is happy to have Pete and Myka join him in the pursuit of objects that "threaten to ruin the world's day."

And CCH Pounder (The Shield), who appeared in the pilot, returns in a guest-starring role as Artie's boss, Mrs. Frederic. Her overshadowing and enigmatic presence directs the team's ongoing missions to contain the peculiar, dangerous and threatening objects that must be secured at any cost.

Warehouse 13 comes from Universal Cable Productions and is executive produced by Jack Kenny (The Book of Daniel) who also serves as showrunner. David Simkins (Dresden Files) is executive producer; Jace Alexander (Burn Notice, Rescue Me) is co-executive producer and director; and Stephen Surjik (Monk, Burn Notice) is producer/director.

NOT 'MACGRUBER.' Is there anything more fun to watch for 24 hours than Richard Dean Anderson saving the world with string and paper clips on "MacGyver" (tomorrow 6 a.m.-Monday 6 a.m., Sleuth)? If nothing else, this '80s action fave helps explain those Pepsi parody commercials. Full schedule at sleuthchannel.com/Series.
