      - CTV's summer hit series highlights midseason schedule -

      -------------------------------------------------------------------------

TORONTO, Dec. 16 /CNW/ - FLASHPOINT, the hit CTV original series that
climbed to the height of the ratings charts in both Canada and the U.S. this
past summer, returns to the CTV schedule this winter on Friday, January 9 at 9
p.m. ET on CTV. The return of the Canadian series will provide a lead-in to
the series premiere of Stephen Bocho's new legal drama RAISING THE BAR at 10
p.m. ET. Visit CTV.ca to confirm local broadcast times and catch up on demand
on previously aired FLASHPOINT episodes. Production of the new episodes begins
in January in Toronto. Colm Feore (TRUDEAU, Paycheck) and Wendy Crewson
(REGENESIS, HUNT FOR JUSTICE) guest star in the next new episode (Jan. 9),
joining series regulars Enrico Colantoni, Hugh Dillon, Amy Jo Johnson and
      David Paetkau.

FLASHPOINT's success is the culmination of a three-year process that
began with CTV's Writer's-Only Development Program in 2005. With an average
audience of 1.2 million viewers in Canada(*) and 8 million viewers in the
U.S.(xx) since debuting No.1 on both CTV and CBS this past summer,(*) FLASHPOINT
is the first series since CTV's DUE SOUTH to air in network primetime in both
Canada and the United States. This past August, CTV announced that it would
order 13 more episodes of the hit series before bumping the order to 18. Three
weeks later, CBS announced their renewal of FLASHPOINT in the U.S. as well.

(xx) Media Note (xx) - Download all-new photos from FLASHPOINT at
      ctvmedia.ca.

"FLASHPOINT has been one of the year's greatest highlights on North
American television," said Susanne Boyce, President, Creative, Content and
Channels, CTV Inc. "Now, we begin 2009 with more episodes of this engrossing,
high-energy series. I encourage everyone who hasn't seen this addictive drama
to catch up on episodes at CTV.ca before its return."

"It is great to be back in production and to continue working closely
with both CTV and CBS on FLASHPOINT," said Executive Producers, Anne Marie La
Traverse and Bill Mustos. "In the new episodes, the SRU team's unity is tested
as it faces extraordinary new tactical challenges, while fighting to keep the
      peace within its own ranks."

Colm Feore and Wendy Crewson guest star in FLASHPOINT's next brand-new
episode. In "Eagle Two" (Friday, January 9 at 9 p.m. ET) (visit CTV.ca to
confirm local broadcast times), the SRU handles a VIP protection shift at a
lavish downtown Toronto hotel. David Graham, a charming philanthropist (Feore)
and his beloved wife (Crewson) are in town to give away $5 million at an
international conference. Ed Lane's (Dillon) admiration for the man shatters
when the philanthropist's past catches up with him in a terrifying public
      showdown.

FLASHPOINT also received critical acclaim as it climbed the ratings
chart. "FLASHPOINT has gone from strength to strength, thanks to some
excellent writing and direction", said The Globe and Mail. "FLASHPOINT is a
hit," said Sun Media and the New York Daily Post called it "no flash in the
      pan."

Each new episode of FLASHPOINT will be made available on demand on the
CTV Video Player at CTV.ca following its television broadcast on Saturdays
beginning January 10 at 9 a.m. ET. Episodes will also be made available the
day after broadcast from the iTunes Store in Canada. Also, viewers can catch
up on previous episodes at CTV.ca and on iTunes.

FLASHPOINT follows a unique group of cops that can do what ordinary
police officers can't. Members of a highly-skilled SWAT team (inspired by
Toronto's Emergency Task Force), they're trained in negotiating, profiling and
getting inside the subject's head at the very emotional breaking point (the
"flashpoint") that triggered the crisis. They'll do whatever it takes to
defuse the situation to try to save lives - all in a day's work.

FLASHPOINT stars an impressive list of talent, including Enrico Colantoni
(VERONICA MARS) as Gregory Parker, the team sergeant and head negotiator; Hugh
Dillon (DURHAM COUNTY) as Ed Lane, team leader and lead sniper; Amy Jo Johnson
(FELICITY) as Julianna "Jules" Callaghan, sniper and rappelling expert; David
Paetkau (WHISTLER) as Sam Braddock, the newest sniper on the team; Michael
      Cram (STARGATE: ATLANTIS
) as Kevin "Wordy" Wordsworth, who specializes in
close quarter combat; Sergio Di Zio (Just Buried) as Mike "Spike" Scarlatti,
explosives and tactical toys expert; and Mark Taylor (Doomstown) as Lewis
"Lou" Young, specializing in less lethal solutions.

FLASHPOINT is produced by Pink Sky Entertainment and Avamar Entertainment
in association with CTV and CBS Paramount Network Television. Anne Marie La
Traverse and Bill Mustos serve as executive producers. Co-creators Mark Ellis
and Stephanie Morgenstern helm the writing department. Virginia Rankin and
Trish Williams are the CTV Production Executive working with the series. Brett
Burlock is Director, Program Development for CTV. Susanne Boyce is President,
Creative, Content and Channels, CTV Inc. Alchemy TV and Tele Munchen are the
      international distributors.

CHRISTINA COX (guest star in both SG1 and SGA)

        http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice/pre.../gravity.shtml

        Press Releases
Ron Livingston to star in Defying Gravity for BBC Two
        Category: TV Drama; BBC Two
        Date: 16.12.2008

Ron Livingston (The Time Traveler's Wife, Sex And The City, Band Of Brothers) stars in Defying Gravity, a new adventure drama series from creator and Executive Producer James Parriott (Grey's Anatomy) and Executive Producer Michael Edelstein (Desperate Housewives).

The 13-part thriller begins filming in Canada in January 2009, and will broadcast on BBC Two later next year.

Janice Hadlow, Controller, BBC Two, says: "In 2009 it will be 40 years since man first landed on the moon and yet the subject of space remains as mysterious and fascinating as ever, making it a timely and compelling backdrop for this epic adventure."

Set in the near future, Defying Gravity revolves around the exploits of eight astronauts from five countries (four men and four women) who undertake a mysterious six-year international space mission through the solar system.

With the eyes of the world upon them – everything they do is monitored and every emotion they feel scrutinised – they soon discover that their real assignment is not at all what they thought...

Jane Tranter, BBC Controller, Fiction, says: "The calibre of the talent involved in this drama series both in front and behind-the-scenes makes Defying Gravity one of the most exciting new series for 2009.

"Although primarily a human drama, the landscape and context and genre of Defying Gravity give it a very different flavour from other dramas on the BBC."

The cast also includes: Laura Harris (24, Stargate, CSI) as Chloe; Eyal Podell (Commander In Chief, The Young And The Restless) as Mintz; Christina Cox (Stargate: Atlantis) as Jen; Zahf Paroo (Firewall) as Ajay and Florentine Lahme will play Nadia.

        Further casting to follow.

Creator/executive producer Jim Parriott added: "This is a new way of making and selling television, and we could not be more thrilled to be in business with the BBC and ahead of the curve.

"It has been a joy to work with this team, and all the partners on Defying Gravity, as we set out to build a show with drama, humour and suspense – elements we hope will resonate for viewers across the pond and planet."

Filming in Canada for six months from 19 January 2009, Defying Gravity is a US/Canadian co-venture with Fox Television Studios and Omni Film Productions Ltd in association with Canadian broadcasters CTV and SPACE, German broadcaster ProSieben, and the BBC.

The creator/executive producers are James Parriott (Grey's Anatomy; Ugly Betty) and Michael Edelstein (Desperate Housewives).

Executive producers also include Brian Hamilton (Robson Arms) and Michael Chechik for Omni Films and Tim Haines (Primeval; Space Odyssey: Voyage To The Planets) for Impossible Pictures.

Directors include David Straiton (House) and Peter Howitt (Sliding Doors).

Defying Gravity was commissioned by Jane Tranter, BBC Controller, Fiction.

          by Bill Harris

Patrick McKenna plays a great shifty guy. Fortunately, he takes that as a
compliment. "Yes, thank you," McKenna said with a laugh. "I think you kind of
have to be shifty to be a Canadian actor. I list it under 'special skills' on
          my resume."

Streep has agreed in principle to a Mamma Mia! sequel, even though there are no Abba songs left to desecrate, and this wins by a whisker in the category of Worst Film-Related Announcement of the Year. The runner-up is surely the news that Robert Carlyle may be cast as Leonard Rossiter in a forthcoming biopic. What a kick in the teeth for Ralph Fiennes, whose apoplectic turns in Martin McDonagh's comic thriller In Bruges, and on stage in God of Carnage, felt to me like unofficial auditions to play the man who would be Rigsby.

                        Poverty. Hunger. Dislocation. Joblessness.

Most of us go to the movies to get away from these grim realities.

Yet some of our most memorable films have reflected hard times and the ways in which we cope with and sometimes overcome the boogeyman of economic depression.

Here are 10 great "hard times" movies. They range from children's fare to grown-up seriousness, from somber drama to hilarious comedy.

-"The Full Monty" (1997): This Brit film inspired a musical and is widely regarded as a comedy. Yet its first half-hour is painful, depicting the emotional and mental toll of joblessness among a group of former foundry workers. With Robert Carlyle, Tom Wilkinson, Mark Addy.

                          SG1/SGA - Chris Gauthier (SG1: AoT)/Ben Cotton - Harper's Island on CBS - Thursday, April 9th:

Clique Clack has posted that "Harper's Island" will air on CBS, premiering on Thursday, April 9th. This series is filmed in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

Among the cast (so far) are: Chris Gauthier (Eureka and SG1's Ark of Truth) and Ben Cotton (SGA's Kavanaugh).

                          The series is described as:

(from CBS's press release, December 2008) HARPER'S ISLAND, a 13-episode mystery event, premieres Thursday, April 9 (10:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT) and concludes Thursday, July 2 (10:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT). HARPER'S ISLAND is about a group of family and friends who travel to a secluded island for a destination wedding. They've come to laugh... to love... and, though they don't know it... to die. As the wedding festivities begin, friendships are tested and secrets exposed as a murderer claims victims, one by one, transforming the wedding week of fun and celebration into a terrifying struggle for survival. In every episode, someone is killed and every person is a suspect, from the wedding party to the island locals. By the end of the 13 episodes, all questions will be answered, the killer will be revealed and only a few will survive.

SGA's Visual Effects Supervisor, Michelle Comens, is also working on this series.

Posted Dec 18th 2008 1:11PM by Mike Moody

I still haven't figured out how to display my "feats of physical strength" in this post, so let's just get to the annual Festivus airing of grievances.

First off, like everyone else around here, I'm disappointed by NBC's decision to give fans of hour-long dramas the finger. You want me to watch Leno on primetime five nights a week, NBC? Do you really hate me that much? Second, I'm saddened by Sci Fi Channel's decision to cancel Stargate Atlantis, my favorite guilty pleasure. Third, I got it in for you, America! Thanks a lot for not making Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles the hit it deserves to be.

There's more -- trust me there's more -- but here at TV Squad we also celebrate Festivus by sharing our TV wish list. This year, I'm wishing for:

... * David Hewlett's Star Crossed to actually happen, be a hit, and for Hewlett to become a household name.
