I always thought it stood for StarGate. Seems reasonable.

maybe, but i don't ever think we will know the actual meaning of it. (besides , showing it's not the movie).
Calvin grows up to be Frazz. The logical continuation of this is, of course, that Frazz then grows up to be Edward Norton's character from Fight Club. And thus, all four of these characters are gods.Let's go one more step. Calvin grows up to be Jeremy, who grows up to be Frazz, who grows up to be "Tyler Durden," while Suzie grows up to be Haruhi Suzumiya; since Kyon becomes The Doctor, this leads to the inescapable conclusion that after the end of Fight Club, Calvin becomes Captain Jack.

It's not like it really has any meaning. It's just a designation.

The SG in SG1 is Star Gate, kind of like SGC is StarGate Command.

And the phonetic alphabet for SG is Sierra Golf, not Gulf. Sierra Gulf is a plane.

"Sierra Golf" is simply military phonetic alphabet for the letters "S" and "G."

The "SG" in SG-1" stands for "Stargate."

All the military buffs already got what I was going to say.

So I'll just pat them on the back and reinforce what they said: SG-1 stands for "StarGate unit/team/squad/platoon/whatever One."

                    I thought that was obvious.

I think that it is for StarGate. Why would it stand for anything else?

It isn't "Stargate Stargate 1," it's "Stargate SG-1." Many acronyms (especially in the military/government) can exist independently of what they stand for.

Another good example is the CDC. The acronym stands for "The Center for Disease Control and Prevention" but the letters themselves only represent the words "center," "disease," and "control."

It would actually be more fun to come up with alternative meanings. The blatantly obvious is also boring. Someone mentioned Sam'sGroup - if there's only one woman on a team, Single Girl - 1.
