I've made some very good friends here and elsewhere online too.Some I've met and others are still on my wishlist.
I know I used to keep very quiet at work because almost nobody had any interest at all in scifi,and I had no interest in soaps and most of their fave shows.Sometimes we'd have a Sport interest in common,if we were lucky!
Teabreaks were ok ,because they were short and usually work-chat time,but lunchtimes could get very tedious so I used to find a quiet spot outdoors to eat and relax.
My theory on why it's often easy to make online friends is that usually we're into a common interest,maybe even several ,so that leads to curiosity about each other as people as a side effect of posting together.
When we meet a stranger in "real" life,we tend to weigh them up and judge them by their appearance,how they dress,whether we think they're making enough,or too much eye contact,and how they speak,how they smell,where they come from and so on.
That can make us seem overcritical,but it's basic nature.They measure us the same way.
Online : we look at what that stranger says in their posts,how they phrase their opinions,how they reason out their theories...and if they seem likeable and approachable.
Friendship grows from that.
Trouble is ,often because we have no visual signals,misunderstandings can happen too.
That's life though.
