    Supplementing Forum Search with Google

Here's a tip for all of you who are sick of the pretty well useless search function of this board.

    1. Go to google.
    2. Select advanced search
    3. In the "Domain" box type forum.gateworld.net
    4. Search as normal.

I searched for tpb as an example, and got 107 hits in 0.21 seconds.

One word of caution: people have had problems with cookies if they open too many threads at the same time.

You can also use any google search box, such as is found on the firefox toolbar by putting site:forum.gateworld.net after the search term. Like this
    PTB site:forum.gateworld.net

Does it only work with Google or can you use any search engine

It works at least with google, I haven't tried any others. Check their advanced search options to see the search can be limited to just one domain.

I tried two different search engines. Any search engine that allows an advanced search will work

Google's index isn't completely up to date, nor does it have access to all pages. It's a nice workaround, but I'd prefer to use the forum's own search engine without have to go to an external site.

Well, it should index most pages ordinary users have access to...

We will be replacing the VB search shortly with a Google Search. It will reduce the load on our server and provide much better results.

My staff meetings take place on the midway at Six Flags, where I proceed to blow that month's server funds. I have yet to figure out why nobody is showing up.

No wonder the mods are underpaid.
