    Spoiler:
Why is it always the female characters 'playing nurse', James and Park again, as with Sabotage and Space I think, and maybe a couple of others. Subconscious sexism from the producers? I'm yet to see a good reason for it.
    Spoiler:
I saw Greer and Becker do the nurse thing too along the way. And Varro back in Alliances... It happens, I suppose. Maybe it's just that the girls are all friends and stuff, and they stick together and have learnt some stuff from TJ, or maybe it's that the writers were never all that not-sexist, at least in my mind. Never really thought about it, but I mean, come on. They're all guys.

It's not sexism. Their maternal instinct make them more warm and nurturing and more prone to "playing nurse" and that is a psychological fact. Sure there are exceptions and deviations to this but I don't think that the portraying of this diferentiation in the psichological fabric of sexes is a sign of discrimination. It would have been sexist if it was somehow implied that this is all that women are meant to do and that the "real jobs" are reserved for men or smth like that but since they are plenty strong women on this show(military, decision making, scientist) I don't think this is the case.

Well, James and Park were 'playing nurse' while the other soldiers were defending the ship, and while the other scientists were trying to fix the ship in Space. I don't for a second think they're doing it on purpose to show 'women in their place', but maybe subconsciously, without thinking.

Well, we have seen Varro assisting TJ and Koz was asked to help her in "Intervention". And of course, MattSilver 3k already mentioned Greer and Becker. So, I don't think it is a "female only" thing.

Would Greer be doing that during a battle though? Because James was, for some strange reason.

Cool, the chess set is finished. It's nice to see Eli and Rush socialising even though I was hoping to see Young and Rush playing chess.

I wonder if Rush will find a way to retrieve Perry. I don't see how it can be a happy ending though as it's not like they can just whip up two spare bodies. I suppose they might find a way to upload their conciousness to the ship that way they could re-appear occasionally.

I think he means during the last part of "Divided" ( episode 12, season 1 )

It's a traditional female role. Women tend to take care of people, be it as nurses, mothers, teachers etc. Men? Not so much.

That sneakpeek is made of pure win. The chess set is finally finished! I was waiting for that ever since he started carving it in Faith!

She's an airman, and Park is a scientist. Having them randomly give up those jobs to play nurse during a battle because it's a 'traditional female role' is sexist in the extreme.

Let me rephrase that; It used to be a traditional female role. I'm not suggesting that they should therefore be doing that, just that traditionally such roles tend to be fulfilled by females. Not because of purposeful or subconscious sexist thought, they just tend to fill that role more than males.

You're not referring to Rush's operation in Divided? James, Wray and Chloe were there too.

                        Your argument also applies to the males;
Scott, greer, etc. are military, Brody and Volker are scientists, should they randomly give up those jobs to play nurse during a battle ( so that it's politically correct/ gender-equality et all ) ? There are no dedicated nurses or other medics/docters on Destiny, who knows maybe it's on their list of emergency duties. Maybe Scott and Greer go put out fires or something whereas the women mentioned just happen to help out in the infirmary. They might like doing that particular job more than the other.

I think more thought goes into spotting sexism in shows than ( subconsious ) thought from the writers.

No, but that's another good example.

No they shouldn't, but they don't anyway do they? It's always the female characters.

I see what you mean, but during "Space" and "Divided", Greer was occupied with other tasks. He is practically "the" soldier aboard Destiny, so it makes sense that he is fighting the enemy during a battle.

I agree, great to finally see it in action I wonder who else might play a game or two. Rush against Young would be epic

Do you think those male characters should be helping out as nurse though?

It could also be explained as giving the female characters something to do in the script, because the male characters were busy with some other tasks such as flying the shuttle or fiddeling with shields. They could either put their female characters helping out in the infirmary, or some random male extra's. The more an extra gets to do, the more he costs, eh?

Before this spins out of hand into the realm of off-topic, I do not think it is sexist.

To be honest I do think the fact they need to have female soldiers and scientists play nurse in order to give them something to do is symptomatic of some underlying sexism in the show. After all they don't need to make the male soldiers and scientists play nurse in battles because they are busy doing their actual jobs and getting most of the action and dialogue.

Yes, I accept that's partly because it's an ensemble but the fact is they chose to make the meaty roles male - and I have to ask why?

To get vaguely back on topic I'm looking forward to seeing Ginn again in Hope but as much as I liked Ginn her function on the show is as a love interest for a male lead Eli rather than having her own story (same with Perry and Rush).

I should add I don't think the show is rampantly sexist and I do think they have some very good female characters but I also think they could have done better or seemed more balanced if at least one of the leads (Young, Rush, Eli) was a woman.
