I have a fondness for short hair but yeah, there's something about it being a little longer that, what, softens? him somehow? Maybe that's fitting for all the changes he's having to go through? It must really be something for a guy with a sense of humor like his to play it so wonderfully straight all the time. I can just see him behind the scenes, getting the last of the chuckles out and then going right into "Young".

Yeah, 'softens' is definitely the word. I guess it's precisely that - it's NOT a military cut, so it takes a little of that harsh military edge off of him. But the military edge/authority is sexy too!
And you are absolutely right. It sounds like LF is the kind of guy that's always laughing! It's amazing how well he acts as Young - he brings a real gravitas to the role, IMO. He does actually say an awful lot, but his facial expressions say it all. How conflicted he is sometimes, how difficult he really finds his position, and how much he really cares for the people on board... how much he wants to see them safely home. LF deserves a lot of kudos for his portrayal!
