Cliffhangers are a very cynical way of getting the viewer to come back for the next season in my opinion, it's basically the writers not being confident enough of bringing people back through entertainment alone, so use this underhand tactic to bribe you into it. I personally don't think it works, a well made season arc that's resolved in epic style is much more likely to make people want more of the same than a cliffhanger, they seem to piss a lot of people off in fact. Lost City was the best season ender in my view, the epic storyline was resolved, but there were still questions left unanswered and plenty of places to go.
