    Stargate: Continuum

The SG-1 crew comes back for an adventure in the Arctic—and enters an alternate world

    By John Sullivan

The richness of a theatrical release

Continuum is the second direct-to-DVD SG-1 movie since the series wrapped. Where the earlier Ark of Truth concerned itself largely with wrapping up loose ends from the show, Continuum presents a stand-alone story. Writer and show runner Brad Wright has made no secret of his intent to use Continuum to demonstrate to MGM that Stargate can reach audiences beyond the series' fan base and convince the studio to green-light new movies for the big screen.

    **snippage**

The fans, on the other hand, are going to eat Continuum up with a spoon. It really does look like a theatrical release, with remarkable production values for direct-to-DVD. The producers have made much of how they got to shoot a key sequence on the real Arctic ice pack with a real nuclear submarine. It's an impressive sequence, but it's not the only one. There are also some excellent battle scenes aboard the freighter, some good-looking aerial action and more.

    **snippage**

Whether Continuum will lead to more big-screen Stargate movies remains to be seen, but between Atlantis, the possibility of another two direct-to-DVD movies and ongoing rumors of a third series, the Stargate franchise appears to be on solid footing. And Continuum is an entry it can be proud of. —John

      DVD Review: 'Stargate: Continuum'

      Thursday, July 31, 2008

      Pittsburgh Post-Gazette by Sharon Eberson

The "Stargate SG-1" franchise's friendship with branches of the U.S. military -- which counts officers with clout as fans of the 10-year TV series -- elevates this straight-to-DVD film. There's remarkable footage from a shoot in the Arctic and more aboard a nuclear submarine and F-16s, all great enhancements to the time-travel story. The rest is somewhat of a throwback to the Richard Dean Anderson days, before his Col. Jack O'Neill became a general and when the Gou'ald were Interstellar Enemies No. 1. Jack is back, along with other old friends and enemies, because of a convoluted scheme hatched by the cheerfully despotic Ba'al (Cliff Simon).

      **snippage**

Features of the "making of" variety and the Arctic shoot are at least as much fun as the movie itself. With the Stargate universe expanding to another spinoff (to join "Atlantis"), plus actors working on other projects, it might be hard to get the whole gang together again for more "SG-1" adventures. That would be a shame, though, because "Continuum" doesn't feel like a proper send-off for such a solid sci-fi franchise.

I liked the first direct-to-DVD Stargate SG-1 movie, Ark of Truth, merely because it was more SG-1, which I was starving for. But it wasn’t actually a terribly good movie... or even a terribly good overlong episode of the show. But Continuum, out on DVD this week? Ahhhh. Now this is what I want to see in a Stargate movie. It’s not just a fantastic overlong episode of the show, it actually feels like a movie, with big stakes and big drama, not to mention a big cast and a big budget, for TV: about $7 million, and it’s all on the screen. Heck, they even shot some of this in some unfakeable locations in the Arctic -- in the freakin’ Arctic! -- and there’s not many movies can say that.

The people here can be really harsh critics, but at least it's nice to know that the DTS-HD Master Audio track was 24-bit!

            **snippage**

The weight of spinoffs from the 1994 sci-fi movie Stargate could sink a battleship - 10 seasons of Stargate SG-1 and several more of Stargate: Atlantis - and now a second spinoff movie, Stargate Continuum, has gone straight to video. Since describing the plot at length would require a vocabulary vouchsafed mainly to Stargate fans, I will merely say it involves an attempt by the villain to retroactively eliminate the Stargate, which is a wormhole in the time-space continuum. Bonus features include an amusing talk by astrophysicist Jaymie Matthews on the science and paradoxes of time travel. Given a choice between the science and the dramatic licence needed for an exciting show, Matthews says, go with the licence.

              STARGATE CONTINUUM

The Stargate odyssey continues with panache in Stargate: Continuum. This second direct-to-DVD, widescreen feature arrived this week.

With its mind-boggling time-space shifts, which rewrite human history into the 21st century, the movie is ambitious.

              And it delivers.

Even Richard Dean Anderson was impressed enough to make a comeback, first as comic relief and then in a fresh role in the parallel universe that is created when ... well, it's too complicated to explain. Just watch the movie.

I would like to tell you what else is on the DVD, such as the featurette showing cast & crew on an arctic ice flow north of Alaska. But the disc, while it looks undamaged, doesn't play properly. When this happens to you with DVDs, take them back and raise a stink.

Quality control is slipping in this industry.

                Stargate Continuum DVD Review

(Please follow the link for the complete review.)

The plot as a whole is pretty well done, at least until you get to the end, but I'll talk about that in a moment. There was one genuinely unexpected twist that I was quite happy to see. I only wish they'd had more time to develop the ramifications of it. That's perhaps why the ending is where I had the most problem. It's just...missing something. (Jack O'Neill maybe? He's in much of the first half before fading away.) It all wraps up too quickly, and I found myself wondering what they could've done if this were a four-episode arc of the show. One thing I will say: Character death shouldn't be milked for tragedy points when you're operating around time machines--or at the very least, not when you're standing IN time machines. Going to slow-mo just gives the viewer more time to realize that, oh, hey, they can fix that fairly easily right now.

                  DVD Review: Stargate - Continuum

Stargate fans, here is another goodie for your collection. Stargate Continuum is out on DVD with some great specials to add to the fun and adventure. What could be better than the SG-1 Team all together again in an action packed thought provoking tale full of the things that make us love this series?

Stargate - Continuum is another excellent story, different from the last movie (The Ark of Truth) but equally as interesting with complex themes, emotions, high energy action sequences and always the chemistry of the cast giving that extra sparkle to the performances.

                  **snippage**

Stargate – Continuum is now available at Amazon. It is available for pre-order at AmazonUK for an Aug. 18th release.

                    **snippage**

Continuum does start a little slowly, and doesn’t feature nearly as much of the space opera offered by the last movie, Stargate: The Ark of Truth. Still, it’s fun. Ba’al, a mostly defeated Big Bad, has figured out how to use the wormhole network as a time machine, going into the past to do a Terminator on the time lines, ensuring his rise to galactic domination.

Our intrepid heros have to repair the temporal damage, but in the meantime a lot of familiar faces end up playing different versions of themselves, a nice twist that keeps things fresh. And if the Stargate producers have a secret weapon, it’s in their ability to leverage Stargate’s immense legacy (over a decade’s worth of characters, devices and locations) without being bogged down by it.

...Also, posthumous props to SG-1 regular Don S. Davis, who died before Continuum was released, but was nevertheless a pretty great character actor--not only on SG-1 but also in Twin Peaks and The X-Files and tons of other genre stuff. His brief appearance in Continuum is kind of a downer: If SG-1 has anything that other sci-fi TV shows lack, it's some genuinely likeable characters, and they're ones who're usually genuinely likeable not because of the show's writing, but rather because of the solid character actors behind them.

The story itself will be enough to excite the fans but it works even better as homage to the series. The plot worked well enough to be on a par with a double length episode with a “top echelon of the series” in terms of quality. I'm sure some of the mucky-muck poo bahs will say anything to tear down a good thing. Some folks are only pleased with the sound of their own put down. I like the franchise enough to have watched all the episodes many, many times, watch all of Stargate: Atlantis, and defend it against the haters who tend to pop up but Stargate: Continuum needs no defense. It is a great ride from start to finish. As my review is written for everyone, the "got to have it" sort of fans are certainly going to pick this up; for the unwashed, watch a few episodes in syndication if you have any doubts, then go out and buy your own copy of Stargate: Continuum, I am watching mine again.

                          **snippage**

Science fiction is littered with stories about time travel and alternate timelines. Continuum falls somewhere in the middle. Fans of the show and time travel flicks in general should have a good time and the presentation on Blu-Ray is never bad (even if it's also never great). Continuum was clearly developed and filmed for the millions of Stargate lovers out there and I have a hard time believing they won't be satisfied. If you're not a fan and are just looking for a sci-fi fix, you could probably do better, but even casual viewers will probably find something to like here. Like almost all Stargate, Continuum is never all that bad or all that good, but it gets the job done. And the Blu-Ray edition gets in done in High-Def with an audio commentary by the producer/writer and director with three featurettes. The Stargate universe is alive and well.

This is not the way things are supposed to be.

If there is a Holy Trinity of modern Science Fiction, it is the three "Stars" -- Star Trek, Star Wars, and Stargate, and the greatest of these is Star Trek. Beginning with the 1966 television series "Star Trek," Captain Kirk, Mister Spock, and Bones McCoy blazed the galactic path for four additional, very-long running television series (and a short-lived animated series) and, to date, ten motion pictures (with one in the works), each taking us where no man or beagle had gone before, doing so in a future several centuries ahead of our own. Star Wars created an entirely new galaxy, one far, far away, where good and evil vied for galactic dominance in six motion pictures that spanned three or four generations of characters. These two series offered a time and place different from those that encase us here on Earth, and offered to audiences an escape from the "mundane" confines of their own planet. Where Stargate differs from the other "Stars" is that its setting is in the here and now. One may argue that the best Science Fiction is that which alters the world in which we live ever so slightly. Motion pictures such as Independence Day, The War of the Worlds, The Day the Earth Stood Still, I Am Legend, and Cloverfield each show "now" with a twist, and it is the twist that makes them all that more real and escapist. Seeing the Death Star looming in space through the windows of the Millennium Falcon does not have the same impact as seeing a flying saucer the size of a city floating a quarter of a mile above Los Angeles, or a smaller flying saucer landing on a Little League field a few blocks from the White House.

                            **snippage**

Stargate: Continuum is a fine direct-to-video film and a nice compliment to the ever-popular television show. Not only is the film a worthy entry to the series for those not familiar with the numerous seasons gone by, but grizzled "Stargate" veterans will enjoy the continuation of the camaraderie between the characters and the way the film progresses the story lines and characters of the show. MGM brings Stargate: Continuum to Blu-ray in a nice package that is fairly average and doesn't distinguish itself through either video, audio, or supplemental features quality. The soundtrack is the strongest aspect of the disc, but the supplements and picture quality are fine, too. Hopefully, the television series isn't far behind on Blu-ray, but until then, Stargate: Continuum is a must-buy for fans of the show, and a great introduction to the series for newcomers. Be warned, though, that there are some spoilers for the show during this film. Recommended.

Stargate: Continuum is the second of two made-for-TV movies, following hot on the heels of Ark of Truth. Continuum is also the final instalment of the Stargate: SG-1 franchise. While the show's producers have made it know that they are considering a third movie, as of the start of August 2008 no word on this has been officially announced. Brad Wright [the show's executive producer] has stated in interviews that a third movie would most probably see Jack O'Neill as the central character, but to be honest this movie is a fitting end for the franchise.

                              **snippage**

Personally, speaking as someone whose followed SG-1 from the start, I thought this movie perfectly captured everything that fans loved about the show. This would have worked well as a cinematic release. This is far better than the usual made-for-TV movies that see the light of day. Even the soundtrack has been given the full orchestra treatment.

SG-1 fans will love this lovingly crafted conclusion (for now) to America's longest running sci-fi show.
