I get the idea from 'Unending' that the weapon the Asgard installed aboard the Odyssey was a recent development and so was never deployed aboard their own ships.
The weapon was most likely developed from sensor data from their ship in 'Camelot'.
imho, if the Asgard had the population to rebuild their fleet and man those ships then they could`ve easily deployed the weapon aboard their own ships then gone out and owned the Ori, but they didn`t and wanted to make sure that only the Tau`ri got their technology and that there wasn`t anything left behind for other races to scavenge - something the Ancients probably should`ve done.
I don`t think the protection of these worlds is officially our responsibility, but as we are the only ones who would willingly protect them without expecting something in return, I think we would try to help these worlds if they needed it...and if we get a Naquadah / Trinium mine out of it, that's just a bonus!
But, as previously stated, with the demise of the Asgard and the System Lords, the Protected Planets Treaty is officially null and void.
