There's absolutely no reason that any show as good as Stargate SG-1 or Atlantis has been couldn't go on indefinitely. What they appear to be lacking is a general intent to relate to the viewers. I mean, how many people on a regular basis blow up ships and kill aliens, compared to people that are suffering from terrible diseases and the hardships of war? It's a matter of telling stories about the people in the show in a way that the viewer can relate to, and the writing team doesn't seem to want to do that right now. Hopefully they'll re-learn how to do that. I'll try to keep hope that we'll see more well-written episodes, but my own expectations are probably too high for them to be capable of meeting them before SG-1 and/or Atlantis get cancelled. I really wish it hadn't come to this with SG-1, because I'm afraid that it will take Atlantis down in flames with it.
