Speculation: Spongebob Squarepants. Hear me out on this.
Back when the Ancients ruled the universe, some asshat had to go off and dumb the entire populace with some show about a sponge in the sea who wore pants. This idea was so bad that many people died from the stupidity (they call it a plague, I call it a crime against humanity). Since then, the technology was lost on Terra until a dig in Giza revealed its horrors.
Perhaps the Orii hope that by gaining power from their followers, they can fully eliminate the Spongebob threat once and for all... or at least destroy those who would promote such evil.
