Well, I missed Ship Day. <<sad face>>
BUT! I have finally finished a fic that I started nearly 12 years ago. Seriously. . . So, since today is the 25th Anniversary of our favorite cringe-worthy line that started The Ship, I decided to celebrate today instead. (I consider Sam's challenge to arm-wrestle Jack to be The Start of it All.)
Paradise Reborn
This is a sequel to one of my previous stories called Paradise Bound. If you haven't read it, the sequel won't make much sense.
Both of these are long stories--novel-length. SG-1 'Gates to a planet inhabited to descendants of the Ancient Hawaiian people. These stories are based on the mythology of the islands. Action, adventure, whump, shippy goodness, angst, more angst, Kick-butt Sam, Worried Jack. . . History. . . What more could you ask for? lol. Enjoy!

Re theories on why S/J Confirmation didn't happen: ah, some of the old guard will have to chime in here! I remember this is something we used to talk about a LOT. What bits I remember are...
There were some writer/directors that were pro the ship and brought it out in their episodes (Martin Wood I believe was one of them), but others weren't so hot about the idea. However, the ship was very much written in from the beginning (see the S1 episode "Solitudes" and the S2 episode "Three Hundred Days").
The prevailing theory as to why we never got "Confirmation" is that at the time Stargate was airing, there were few longterm romances in scifi TV. The writers were afraid of saying "they will" to a will-they-won't-they romance — that if Sam and Jack got together onscreen, their chemistry would be lost and the show's viewership would dip. It didn't help that shows like Moonlighting and X Files apparently dipped in quality/viewership when their main couple finally got together. This was a real concern for the network.
Tbh, it seems like it came down to two factors: those in charge being totally divided on the issue, and them writing themselves into a corner in regards to the workplace/rank situation. This doesn't mean they couldn't have written a romance arc anyway — Sam and Jack could have started socialising outside of work, there could have been episodes where they got to together because they were stranded or lost their memories or any number of scifi concepts, they could have discussed their feelings more... So many options narratively, but the divided opinions on the matter prevented anything getting off the ground. It was a stalemate, and they never properly resolved it even when their main barrier (the rank/team situation) was removed.
I haven't heard this military theory though! I do find it intriguing, but considering that the characters so frequently disobey orders and call out people in charge I feel like if the real life military was gonna have a problem with anything in the show, it might have been that?
I've actually managed to interview a bunch of writers from Star Trek, Farscape, and other shows in my line of work. I don't do freelance entertainment journalism any more... but perhaps I should pitch a Stargate piece JUST so I can finally ask the writers this burning question! The 25th anniversary is coming up, after all...
Also, off topic, but how do I delete my sig? lol

A few new stories, if anyone is still out there reading. Hey--who knows? Maybe you're bored this holiday weekend (it's a holiday weekend in the US, at least ).
Beauty in the Broken
WIP. AU, jumps off from "Point of View" and "Beneath the Surface". I'm branching on this one, since I normally stick so close to canon. If you've read my "Cracks in the Glass" story, this one is a quasi-sequel to that.
And I've posted a new chapter to "Things Owed". This one is LONG and super angsty, serving as episode tags to "100 Days" and "Shades of Gray".
Enjoy!

As for the military aspect: the US Air Force actually provided supervision and assistance for the show after the first few seasons, and since they cooperated with the showrunners, they had a say in the plot development. As far as I know, they drew the line at confirming a relationship between Jack and Sam while they were in the same chain of command. But I really do think that the show's leadership was divided, as well. I've also read that Amanda Tapping didn't want to confirm the relationship--I'm not sure why other than that she might have been afraid that there would be some unhealthy character development for Sam Carter being the Colonel's "girlfriend" and not her own person. And really, we've all seen the fallout from characters getting together after prolonged UST, and then the show becomes a soap opera. So, there's a legitimate concern there.
I'm actually glad the show didn't go there early on though because then I never would have starting making videos.sigpic

That was the most frustrating because it made for some confusing behavior from the characters depending on who wrote, directed, etc. Many virtual tomatoes were thrown around in this thread back then.

How is this for a NaNoWriMo idea? We work on our WiP fics. Make a push towork on/finish them. Not necessarily the crazy 50,000 words. But write.
I'm all for it. Even got a Sam/Jack bit or two in my writing folder.sigpic
