To me, the first one is ambiguous. What does that mean? Where would he be? Although, really, the question is ambiguous, too. Gah!

But "Always" is a promise he will stand behind.

I think there was a discussion about the ambiguity of the first quote here already, and while I really like it, I prefer always.

Why? Because to me it is a subtle metaphor for marriage. You could even read it as his wedding vow if you put the strong shipper glasses on. And in a way, I think it was intended as such.
It's not a direct confession of love, but essentially, a wedding (or marriage) is the promise of 'always' so...
They might not be married physically, but their souls are...

For me, one quote has a negative meaning and the other one has a positive meaning. "I wouldn't be here"...without you. "Always"...with you. I'm going with the second one...always, you and I. Jack and Sam.

I love Always. I will always love Always, for obvious reasons but I love the drama and angst and the entire scene that takes place around the first quote. So many different ways to interpret that. I love that Sam even actually showed him the ring. Without the ring, no scene. I'm not sure I would have had the guts to do that. Also, the "always" means more after that scene.

I prefer angst over fluff, but the "I wouldn't be here" quote is too vague for me to even know what to have angsty feelings about. The "Always" moment is both beautiful and unusual because normally they have to have been in mortal danger in order to have such an intimate moment.

I'm like a zombie today, after writing all night and only being able to sleep for a couple of hours... so in my trancelike state, I did this: https://www.facebook.com/sam.jack.forever

I searched for 20 minutes for a facebook page for them. I couldn't believe, that there isn't a page for them already.

Whoever has a facebook, and wants their daily dose of Sam and Jack on their newsfeed, like and follow. The idea is to have fanfic recommendations, pic spams, etc. all on the facebook wall. Anybody wanting to contribute art, pics, screenshots, please do so! And please include the name you want to be credited as (as well as a website to link back to if you want).

Don't know, maybe it's a stupid idea... I'm out of coffee so it's a very likely possibility.

I'm going to give the angst some love because I love me some angst. Besides, with the vagueness of this exchange it can mean whatever you want it to mean. I choose for it to mean that Sam was asking if there could have been any future for them if things had been different and they weren't in the same chain of command. And Jack's reply was that he wouldn't be looking at Sam holding another man's ring in front of his face. In fact, she would be wearing his. That's what I hear during this scene. And I'll stick my fingers in my ears and hum loudly if anyone tries to tell me differently.
