Originally I think they were designed for online gamers to denote what games and clans within the games they belonged to. Like a scouts badge or something. Now it's about things you use, do, or are.

I like them because they're both pretty, and (when I get hold of them) a bit silly.
Which is why I spend so much time on this thread.
