You're probably right, and it was just ordinary (well, strong since the symbiote can fix most things) poison. I forgot that the sarcophagus would likely be days away.
And yes, I agree the sarcophagus would most likely not work more than a day after, at most - if that. Several hours, sure, but not much more than that.
I don't know what Jacob hints at them using, but some kind of small bomb would make sense - perhaps a zat'nik'tel can be set to overload, like a phaser in Star Trek? And whatever it is they use would be taken from them if they are caught, of course, and just killing themselves normally (doing whatever a symbiote can do to kill host + self) would not work when their captor has a sarcophagus, as you say.
