I'd consider myself a multi-shipper too, then. I see so many possibilities that I'd like to go with all of them eventually. I like Orlin and Martouf/Lantash with Sam as well. I'm not writing them right now, but I might do something with them later, either in separate stories or the same story. I'd have to go AU, though. I'm a stickler for getting the details right and so that would be tough for me.

BTW, does anyone have official names for the shippings? I'm not seeing them. In the Yu-Gi-Oh! fandom they've made official names for when two characters appear together like silentshipping for Kaiba and Serenity or blueshipping for Kaiba and Kisara. The names come about for different reasons like the fact that they almost never spoke to each other during the series or they have the same eye color.

There are names out there for certain pairings, but I don't think many rare pairings get named.

SGA has Sparky (John/Elizabeth), Spanky (Teyla/Ronon), McShep (McKay/Sheppard) & McBeck (McKay/Beckett), Shex (Sheppard/Ronon), Sheyla (Sheppard/Teyla)...

HALT! - are they calling Sam/Marty rare? sorry, they are not (and as much as i dislike the pairing, there are some good stories with that out there - amongst the many bad ones...like with most ships that are in a way "mainstream"...Jack/Sam has many bad ones as well!)

as for rare?

Cam/Sam, Sheppard/Sam, Sam/Rondey, Sam/Lorne (those are some i would read - but i have not had that much success finding stories out there - even more as the search functions on some archives really need work/improving)

Unfortunately every pairing that isn't part of the major groupings, is considered a rare pairing. Even Daniel/Janet is considered a rare pairing and that has tons of stories.

I multiship Sam as well. I'm a hardcore Sam/Jack shipper and have been for 11+ years lol, but I can't help shipping her with Cameron as well (and maybe Ba'al... Yeah, Sam/Ba'al is definitely a guilty pleasure of mine haha).

Teyla? - well, i can respect that character, but i am glad i do not have to like her (even more as she lied to John by keeping her pregnancy and the troubles that came with it secret)...same for Vala, I can respect her for her actions on the show fighting the Ori, but I can't stand her behaviour (flirting with everyone, trying to steal the Prometheus, slapping that wrist-band on Daniel, provoking the IOA, playing god for those people as Quetesh etc.)

as for "multi-shipping" - yeah, i do that, too and not just for Samantha, i have Cameron, Daniel, Jack, John, Rodney, Janet, Anise and many many more (also Daniel stories are seldomly really read by me, because while i like that character, i often dislike him being shown as overly naive and too trusting - even more if the story happens in the later season (IMHO he grew out of it, by then!))

hm...i don't think so...hell, he is imaginative, intelligent and all that, but at the end of the day he just wants to enslave people, so i don't think him fun (i might find a women doing the same (Quetesh!) "hot" - but "fun"? - no way mate!)

Pairings are rare if there are 'few' stories out there. If you don't have more than a handful of current writers for a ship, then it's rare. Sam/Jack has several thousands of stories - Sam/Martouf/Lantash have 150-200 written over 15 years. That is rare. I wish it wasn't, because I would like to have something new to read regularly. Not just having one fic being updated once a week! When I am lucky!

I think it is also partially because most pairings have become rare. Yes, Daniel/Janet had a lot of stories years ago, but now they are as rare as most others that isn't Sam/Jack (or sometimes Jack/Daniel). With no new episodes in Stargate, we get fewer people interested in it, and fewer writers. That means it is likely only the most popular pairings that will still get more than a few fics.

(also rare for me is: not being found at every turn - and if you look for Tok'ra-Fictions, that Sam/Marty is not rare in that category, even if on the whole those fics are few compared to Sam/Jack ones )

ps: there's not all that much Tok'ra-Fiction out there, that is why you stumble over marty ones that often, too (as that makes up most of this part of Stargate-Fanfiction)
