The only Wrangler I know is a Jeep. So I read your post and what I saw was Jack driving a Jeep with no pants on. Still works.

Wranglers are another brand of jeans, more of a western style than Levis. Cowboys wear Wranglers They fit differently. My best friend and I used to call it "Wrangler butt" lol

I've probably seen them and not recognized it. There was a guy cosplaying as an early Logan (with bone claws) from X-Men at Dragon*Con 2011... From what you describe, he very well could have been wearing Wranglers. M-hmm... Very possible.

Just to let everyone know that my review for First Ones will be a day late (might actually still be 23rd Sept for those in the States!). I'm just back from holiday (was a last minute thing), so playing catch-up with everything!

The First Ones

Summary:

Daniel is working with SG11 on an archeaological dig where they've found Goa'uld fossils. The team is attacked and Daniel dragged off. The rest of SG11 go in pursuit. It is hours before the SGC is alerted, with only Robert Rothman, SG11's archeaologist, returning to tell the tale.

SG1 and 2 move out immediately on a search and rescue with Jack in command.

Meanwhile, Daniel is engaging with his captor as only Daniel can, and learning some new things about the original Unas and Goa'uld symbiotes, the latter abounding in the local lakes like fish. Daniel strongly suspects that he is either going to be a sacrifice in some rite of passage, or dinner.

As SG1 and 2 begin their search, they find Major Hawkins of SG11, who appears to be traumatised. Even Jack notices his strange behaviour, and soon after, Teal'c discovers the primitive Goa'uld inhabiting the lakes. This creates mistrust between the teams as everyone becomes a suspected Goa'uld host.

With Teal'c being the only one who cannot be host to a symbiote, he is forced to tie up everyone and retrieve Daniel himself. Or so it appears. In actual fact, he doubles back and waits for any potential Goa'uld in the group to reveal themselves. Major Hawkins, the obvious candidate, immediately reveals himself as a Goa'uld, but as Teal'c is freeing the rest of the team, we find out that Rothman has also been taken by a symbiote. Both Rothman and Hawkins are killed, and one other member of SG2 is injured.

In the end, it is just the rest of SG1 who go on to find Daniel, who has managed to communicate with, and befriend, the Unas, Chaka. Chaka is in the process of arguing for Daniel's life with the Alpha male when Sam, Jack, and Teal'c arrive. They are just in time too as it all kicks off. They are able to help Chaka defeat the Alpha male and an extension of friendship is made before the team finally takes Daniel home.

General:

This is a Daniel-centric episode with a good dose of team. I know a lot of people don't like the episodes with the Unas, but I really like this one. We get to see the Goa'uld and Unas in their original state, and we learn that Teal'c and Sam can't sense them because they don't have naquadah in their systems, which gives some interesting back-story.

The tone of the episode is also quite serious with some well placed humour. We can gauge how worried Jack is by how efficient and straight-down-the-line he is. It's times like these that we are reminded that Jack is a Colonel and a really amazing and decisive leader, taking charge but also trusting his team. We see this especially in the exchange between Teal'c and Jack when Teal'c asks Jack to tie everyone up.

I also love Daniel in this episode. He's still Daniel, but with an edge. We see that some of Jack's cynicism has started to rub off on him. He struggles with himself, even contemplating taking Chaka's life to save his own. I don't mind admitting that I was terribly distracted by him in this. He is actually just beautiful to look at.

Also, the Unas make-up is absolutely incredible. So very believable. I wish I had some extras on this DVD so I could see how they do it.

Overall, I give this a 7/10. What it lacks in excitement, it makes up for in good acting and a good script.

Ship:

There's not an awful lot of shippiness in this episode, but boy is there unspoken communication flying all over the place. Lots of looks exchanged and the two of them work seemlessly together as a team – Jack always taking point with Sam right by his side.

I especially loved the scene when Jack wakes up Rothman to ask about Hawkins. Sam is on the other side of them but she is awake immediately, being ultra attentive to her CO. And the look they share after Rothman goes back to sleep is priceless.

These two really know each other well at this stage. I give this a 5/10.

I admit I'm not a fan of Unas episodes and this one is no exception. I do agree with you that Daniel is beautiful to look at. His eyes are so blue!

I also agree that Sam and Jack are very in sync here. In fact, when trying to find something shippy to make a banner for this episode that was really the only thing I could come up with.
