General Review:
A good but frustrating episode. The Bedrosians are really annoying in their stubbornness and generally aggressive demeanor, and even though it's completely understandable - especially given that they are dealing with the military - it gets tiring quickly. I like the weapons they used, and the electric cages are very cool (and really represent a classic SG-1 image to me).
Also, the fact that Nyan is kept on (not just at the SGC but as Daniel's research assistant) and is then never seen or even mentioned again is very annoying. Stargate is usually pretty good at continuity, but they don't even try here. Unless they intended to bring the character back, then why end the episode like that? There was a ton of different things they could have done with Nyan which wouldn't have required us to ever see him again, but it sets up expectations that are never fulfilled. Silly.
The show also hits a new level for special effects here. The bats in the cave are excellent, all the various weapon blasts during the big fight and notably the shuttle crash is great. It doesn't stand up by today's standards at all, but in terms of what the show had done up to this point it's marks a new level.
- A bit of a coincidence that the SGC dial up the planet the very moment that it is uncovered. Carter's explanation of the cold-dialing program doesn't really make sense either. She says "we've got a hit" before the connection has even been made. Until the 7th chevron locks, you never know if the connection will be successful.
Also, I was under the impression that the Gate had been unburied for a while - they just happened to dial in at the tail end of the excavation. It is a bit of a co-incidence, but if the gate had been burried before, there would be no lock.
- First real use of the portable naquadah reactor in a standard off-world mission setting, and it makes it clear that it works in place of a DHD for manual dialing. Nice to have these things clarified. I wonder how many the SGC has, and did Carter build them all?
Overall, actually I like this episode because of the things it touches on - the whole Optrician/Bedrosian ideology thing along with Nyan's slow realisation and willingness to change was well done. Kudos to the actor. He was sincere (if at times a bit annoying) with his "I'm a scientist. When I find evidence that my theories are wrong, it is as exciting as if they were correct."
I also like that while it links to the overall mythos of sg1, it is a good stand alone episode that does not rely on previous ones to be understood.
The writers did a good job of making the Bedrosians unlikable. I throughly dislike Rigar, who wouldn't even listen to his aide (who was also starting to have doubts) and consider another point of view. The episode did paint a good picture of what might happen if one were to have one's worldview shattered. There are people who would take it like Nyan, with wonder and curiosity , like the aide (who, while skeptical, was willing to ask questions.), and Rigar, who clung onto the "old ways" for real life because of his hatred for the Optricians.
This episode ranks quite a bit higher than Demons for me. Though I am Christian, I found Demons hard to watch...it moved so slowly!
I also think this episode would have been more compelling had we seen some of the Optrician's side of the story - but probably budget contraints. They used a lot of $$ on the ep already in the cool special effects. and the guns. creating a new world is a strain on the budget!

Did anybody mention as far as S/J: when they are in the cages, it seems that Jack is really trying to keep the attention off of Sam...trying to draw the focus to himself (maybe to spare her the pain).sigpic
