I would've quite enjoyed Pete walking in on a team night at Sam's place and inadvertently witnessing the smouldering S/J chemistry first hand.

Considering Pete's behavior when meeting Jacob he probably wouldn't even have noticed anything between Sam and Jack - he appears to be blind to subtleties and hints. Was it also in Threads where he visited Sam on base (to visit Jacob I guess) and kissed her on the cheek in front of other personnel and she winced?

Yep it was, she spent most of that visit wincing in fact. He still didn't think anything was wrong, the face she pulled when he showed her the house, her wince at the kiss, and the look on her face, when he asked Jacob about having 'one of those things' in his head. I completely agree, he was blind to subtleties.

I've got this ridiculous idea in my head which just popped in there out of nowhere of SG-1 and Pete going paintballing and Pete trying to take out Jack with his shooting skills with an unsurprising epic fail! The whole thing would end badly with Pete trying to beat up Jack (think covered in mud like the Big/Aiden fight in Sex and the City) and Jack trying to restrain him.

Sam, of course, would dump Pete immediately for embarrassing her one too many times.

I don't blame Jack for his reaction; it's not like Sam sleeping with another guy and actually considering said guy's proposal screams how much she loves Jack. If Jack had told her not to go through with it then they probably would never get out of their subordinate/superior relationship! He had no right to tell her what to do and Sam, really, had no right to ask it of him. As a friend, informing him her guy had just proposed and she was doubting a bit because of her job etc, okay but not as the guy who probably loves you more than anything and has been standing aside for a few months now while you're getting cozy with some loser totally unworthy of you. Besides, Jack is not one to talk about his feelings easily so why would he go out on a limb here and confess his feelings when she might just nod, thank him for his honesty and still go ahead and marry the cop! It's not like Jack had something to offer her other than a 'someday', like it had been for the past few years...

If Jack would have told her to kick the cop to the curb then that 'thing' would always stand between them if they got together later. Heck, Sam might even resent him (okay, she probably wouldn't but worst case scenario) for 'telling her what to do' about Pete if she and Jack still can't get together for a few years, she's too old to conceive by the time they're together and/or too much has happened for their relationship to work out and she's just basically wasted 15+ years pining after someone only to be disappointed and ending up alone again after making a go of it. I'm not saying it wouldn't be the same for Jack, but he's done the whole family thing before and, well, basically had a life once whereas Sam never really got further than a successful career and some failed relationships.

The proposal (heck, the entire relationship) was something for Sam and her alone to reject/accept.

Hmmmmm. Thanks Fems. Gives me a new way to possibly look at this scene which has never made sense to me.

I can see why AT wanted a semi-normal relationship for her character, since so far all we had for her was a crazy ex-fiance who thought he was a god, some infatuated and somewhat creepy aliens and her unresolved feelings for her CO. At least we knew Jack had been capable of a normal relationship, Daniel had been married (and gotten involved with various alien women since) too and Teal'c was 'divorced' and had a new relationship as well.

I also liked Jack's vagueness, especially since it can be interpreted in so many ways in fanfics and that gives us some great angsty stuff!

However, I still stand by my opinion that the choice to accept/reject the proposal was Sam's and hers alone: she either wanted to marry the guy or she didn't. It's not rocket science and Jack's (former or current) feelings for her shouldn't influence the fact that she either wanted to spend the rest of her life with another man or not. Asking Jack at that moment, under those circumstances, and with the intention of having him talk her out of it was simply wrong and unfair to him, her boyfriend and even Sam herself.

But what else could she do? She didn't want to declare her feelings of undying love when Jack had not given her any inkling that he still harbored anything other than friendship for her? Seriously, I'm interested in how you (or anyone else here) thinks Sam should have handled it. Not what you would do, but what Sam should have done that would not have been out of character for her?

Yep. I personally thought it also reflected badly on Sam as well (for me at least) how she handled things with him. But AT loved the plotline so...

Even if they thought it were to be the last season, giving him clearance sounded like an easy, unbelievable cop-out (pun fully intended) which looked like a reward for his stalking and interference in their stakeout. That went straight into unrealistic for me.

Giving Pete clearance when Sam's own father - had he not been a retired general dying of cancer that could improve our relationship with a superior alien race making them our allies - he still wouldn't have clearance, makes Pete's less that a few months (or even less) boyfriend status ridiculous. I don't care if he'd been her boyfriend for 10 years, he wouldn't have gotten clearance!

I think he would have been in the show for the same amount of time, but, for me, his casting in the role was all wrong and he was also badly written.

The role of Sam's boyfriend should have been an understatedly handsome guy who was taller than her in heels and serious - basically, Joe Faxon. Joe was the kind of guy you would expect a woman like Sam to date. He's smart, financially secure, middle-American and charming. Pete was insecure, needy, manipulative and distinctly average-looking.

Even RDA laughed when someone suggested Pete might be competition for Jack - the point of Pete was to create tension of the "hey, this guy could have Jack on the ropes with Sam here " not "wth is she thinking going out with that buffoon?!"

I can imagine McKay's reaction to Pete - "Seriously?!? This is a joke, right? You can't really be dating him? But he's so... And you're so... really? [to himself] Ok, well, I think I'll just go and throw myself into the sea on Atlantis. What's the point of carrying on if guys like that are considered more attractive than me?"

The thing that makes me think that Jack was referring to Sam, not Charlie, was his emphasis. He leant on "I wouldn't be here" rather than "I wouldn't be here" - to me, it was an important emphasis. To me, he was saying "I wouldn't be standing here listening to you ask me to tell you not to marry another guy!" His face says it all. Sam's insensitivity astounded me but she's rubbish at relationships and, to be fair, Jack is equally as bad. It makes them human.

First, let me say I'm running and ducking as soon as I finish this post - I do feel like it was the writing rather than the actor that caused the problem with S/P. The actor was voted one of the post appealing guys women would want to be with for a dog food commercial he was in. BUT, even if he had been written better, I don't want to see Sam with anyone but Jack! (And, of course, even if Pete still looked like he did in his best days during the dog food commercial, he couldn't hold a candle to Jack

I only support Martouf with Sam under very specific circumstances! I've gotten some minor flak for it. You guys know who my #1 with Sam is!

Well, first of all she could have dumped Pete! Especially after realizing she had been contemplating his proposal for two weeks, but preferably right there in Chimera after he turned out to have followed her to the stake out!

But for some unfathomable reason she decided to let it drag on, so I would have expected Sam to have an epiphany that if it took her two weeks to think about a marriage proposal then she obviously wasn't feeling it. I can't really blame her, they hadn't been together for that long and there weren't that many shining moments for Pete during that time...

Anyway, like I said before I didn't mind the talk Sam wanted to have with Jack in Threads and I would have expected something along those lines. Or maybe whatever she had in mind in Lost City when visiting Jack at home before the guys came over. The major problem I had with the scene in Affinity is that she shoves the ring under Jack's nose then is basically thinking aloud about her situation and what to do while Jack is (very bravely, because his heart must have been breaking) trying to be a friend about it and support her in her love life by reassuring her she could overcome those, um, practical problems of combining a family with a career... and then she basically asks him to confess any feelings he might still have for her to help her make up her mind! That was just so... inconsiderate.

So, a talk about any unresolved feelings between them wouldn't be OOC in my opinion, as long as it would be under different circumstances and Sam would think a bit more before she actually opened her mouth. Oh and in a perfect world she would have broken it off with Pete before said talk, since she is obviously still hung up on Jack to a degree and that means her feelings for her boyfriend/fiance aren't really what they're supposed to be if you want to spend the rest of your life with that person.

I don't care at what place the actor might have come in a poll; I still find him very average looking and such a mismatch with AT. Then take in the personality of his character and it's just a big no.

Oh and I think it was very unfair casting if you compare it to the guys: all the women who showed an interest in them were very attractive!
