When I first heard of the alien race whose name is usually pronounced as "Ja'far", I was surprised when its spelling proved to be "Jaffa". Here in England I have known the name Jaffa since junior school, as (1) a place on the coast of Israel, (2) tradename for a brand of oranges (the fruit), but always pronounced to rhyme with "gaffer". This new pronunciation surprised me.
Likewise, when I first heard of the "J'neye", it was unexpected seeing it spelled "Genii", a word which I knew long ago as the plural of a type of a Roman minor deity from Latin class and thought of as "Jee-nee-eye".
