Why is that not only is Carter is a brilliant astrophysicist and a fine military officer but now she is also a medically trained lab assistant. What is she superwoman!?

To answer your thread question, yes she is a Doctor. Not a medical Doctor, but she's got a Ph.D in just about most things.

As for being superwoman, better making Carter look really smart than have to hire different actors each week.

Whilst normally I'm the first to jump on the 'let's bash the overuse of Sam' bandwagon. The Supersoldier scenario actually had a heavy element of physics involved, as opposed to simply medical science.

As for having a PhD in 'most things', I'd assume just the one, most probably Astrophysics, having said that, to have PhD, she would have had to have done an undergrad and Masters equivilent qualification. Where there's a much greater degree for variation, particularly amongst Physics.

Having a general Undergrad BSc in Physics would allow her to study nanotechnologies, astrophysics, and all kinds of 'wacky' physics areas. It would also allow her to do some Psychology, as she claimed - heck, I myself at undergrad went 'out of department' and took a module in Psychology, and the British university regs are a lot stricter than US college regs are in those terms.

As for her Masters, she could then further specialise, but it would not have had to have been in an area related to her PhD. At this point, she could have done an MSc in some area of Quantum or Particle physics, before doing her PhD in Astrophysics.



I will agree though, I miss the older days of SG1 when she sometimes panicked in medical emergencies.

What happens on show like this is: the series regulars are 'bought and paid for' for a whole season's use. they're there, pretty much every day. and if you're watching the budget, it's cheaper to have a series regular do it than it is to spend the time and money finding and casting a guest actor (whose fees range in the thousands) for a single day's work.

so you have regular characters doing stuff that should technically be outside of their knowlegde simply because it's cheaper to have them do it than to hire someone else.

In this specific case, the season 7 confirmation came so late, Teryl had already lined up other work so she wasn't available. Rather than hire someone else to play the doctor, they had 'sam' do it because it was easier to do with the known quantity of a series regular than spend the week or two casting and hiring someone else for a bit part.

Agreed, it actually never occurred to me that there was anything odd about that scene. I just looked at it as her studying the mechanics of the suit the supersoldier was wearing.

in the case of bringing in davis, they'd have still had to pay colin for his work. Use MS instead and save about 3,000 dollars (carmen once said in an interview that his guest roles were about 3,000 dollars, so that's where the figure comes from, as to specific actors, i'm just guessing)

Agreed. And having a PhD, she knows how to study things and deconstruct them to their basic elements, and then be able to describe them to others. She's a smart cookie, but I DID like her not really knowing much about medical issues in the earlier seasons.
