How do you people design these ships? What program do you use, is it hard to do?

Well where to begin................Okay, If you want to start modeling a good program is Google Sketchup. A lot of people use that here and it has become the staple program for stargate ships. If you want to get more involved in modeling then there are a plethora of advanced modeling program like; Maya, 3DS Max, Blender, Lightwave 3D,....etc. They cost some money to buy but it's worth it, Blender is free.
For how we design them, well, we use our imaginations!

As to the how to make models question. The best answer would be follow as many tutorials as you can. The more experience you get with a program the easier it gets to create models.

The better you get all depends on how much time you spend trying to improve yourself.

Nice ships everyone. It's nice to see all of the different designs.

I haven't been working on my ship much thanks to the holidays, and I just got a quad core and new motherboard on boxing day that took a few days to get operational. But I'm loving the render times .

Here is a small update. I really like how the detailing on the bottom of the front turned out. I need to apply that to the engines too.

I remodeled the main turrets. I think that I'll be leaving the smaller turrets as is.

I am going to thin out the detailing on the upper portion of the front. It looks too busy. I like how the bottom turned out far more.

Like Bobertho said, there are any number of programs to do modeling/rendering. The most popular ones are Lightwave, Cinema4D, and 3DS Max. Blender is a free alternative.

A shame Sketchup is only free for eight hours. Barely enough time to learn. Think I'l try blender, not going to spend money on a program I may not even get the gist of!

Sketchup isnt free for an hour?! the free version has all the features of the pro version, the only difference is export options...and for doing scenes you dont need that, just export as a 2d image and use photo shop..

Also there are always ways to get the pro version without paying. But trust me, there isnt much point its almost identical in every way. Just because its free doesnt mean its crap and just because its pro doesnt mean its better...
