Stick with Podium or try Blender. It's a modelling program as well, but it's still free. It's easier to use it in conjunction with sketchup pro, but if you don't have it there's always 'work-arounds.'

This is rendered in Blender. It's the latest update to my vanguard. Added place-holders for the beam-cannons and sloped the front bit down to give it more of a Prometheus feel.
Or you could be like me, and use lightwave to render models

If you add a blue ambient light in the scene, to add a light (or heavy) blue tint to the ships to show that its reflecting the blue giant.Comment
