Well, I hate to put a damper on this but I have to say Labyrinth was... pretty bad.
Super thick nebula? Explosive gas in space?
I have to say that the moment to science in SF stars to degrade, is closely followed by the moment to plot does the same. Don't take this the wrong way, I'm just giving a heads up here.
PS. Cold plasma is possible, and has been demonstrated under laboratory conditions, in fact, it makes good shielding against charged particle radiation and has been considered as such by NASA.
PPS. s09, I just noticed the superficial similarities between our sigs, sorry about that.:O

Nebulae are also very big, and while I acknowledge the technological savvy of the people who built it, it would still take an obscene amounts of resources to intersect a nebula with energy beams thick enough to keep out ships, from what's described of the platforms.
Through densities like what you have are possible, they don't happen in nebulae, maybe a proto star system, or a gas giant would be more appropriate.
