Unfortunately, Horizon seems to be suffering from a case of interest drop-off; their hiatus was so long that most of their fanbase seems to have vanished. Very sad, as I've always loved Alex's work...

                    15x14 "Infiltration"
Synopsis: A long-forgotten race wreaks havoc on a peaceful human world, unaware that their ancient enemy was destroyed years ago... and believing that the deaths of SG-1 are the only way to victory.
                    Spoiler:
On P6X-398, a small group of humans dressed in industrial-era clothing stand before the stargate in the downtown plaza of a large city. The surrounding buildings bear a striking similarity to those in late 1800s Europe on Earth, and the visible technology reinforces that feeling that these people are just discovering the wonders of coal and steam. Just then, the portal that dominates the center of the square begins to light up until all seven chevrons have been illuminated. The gate activates as expected, but the people don't seem to be surprised all; clearly, they have been living with knowledge of the device and a basic idea of how it works for some time now.

After a moment, the puddle wavers, and four figures walk though, dressed in green-and-black offworld gear and carrying P90s. This is, of course, the galaxy-famous SG-1, finally back in action and consisting of Lt. Col. Cameron Mitchell, Maj. Rebbecca Eaton, Dr. Daniel Jackson, and Vala Mal Doran. As they arrive on the planet, Vala is in the process of explaining that she's only going to be a part of the team until Earth gets back on its feet, as she does have an interstellar organization lead ("Interludes"). But Mitchell is just glad that she's here for now, as it's a really good feeling having the band back together again, even if they are substituting Samantha Carter for Rebbecca. Punching her new CO on the arm, Eaton mutters that she can still outshoot him anyday, and proudly remarks that it'll only be a matter of time before they all can't believe they ever survived a mission without her.

Turning their attention back to those waiting to greet them, the team steps forward, Daniel inclining his head in a friendly manner and informing the leader of the world's delegation that they're here to replace SG-3 in negotiating for new supplies. Apparently, P6X-398 has a completely-untapped vein of trinium, which will be essential to the Tau'ri as they try and rebuild their society and military. The native group's leader says that he understands completely, and gestures for SG-1 to follow he and his associates to the city hall, where they can continue the talks in private. As the two parties begin to depart the plaza, though are unaware of someone watching them from miles away. All that is seen is a view of the humans through what is probably an alien form of binoculars, but it's plain that there is another presence on this pastoral planet, and it's even plainer that they have a keen interest in SG-1.

Back on Earth, Talbot is standing in the General Assembly hall at the United Nations, working with a small committee to streamline the distribution of foodstuffs from offworld. Clearly, her mission of mercy to the Alliance had paid off, and regular shipments are coming in via cargo ship and stargate to feed the just-under six billion people trying to make a living among the ruins of the planet's great cities. As she discusses an issue relating to a crisis erupting in southeast Asia, a marine approaches and taps her on the shoulder, whispering something in her ear before retreating. Looking somewhat shocked, Danielle excuses herself from the discussion and heads for the exit, grabbing her suit jacket off of a nearby chair and yanking it on.

Outside, in the cold autumn air, a puddle jumper is taking off from the UNHQ grounds, leaving a single woman dressed in a hastily-ironed-looking US Air Force uniform. Coming toward her out of the front gate, Talbot smiles and informs Col. Samantha Carter that the Air Force isn't technically in existence anymore, and that the only military organizations on the planet are the Free People's Armed Forces and the resistance movement. Trying to find some humor, Sam remarks that she really didn't have anything appropriate to wear to the now-de facto capital of the new government. Construction crews can be seen in the distance continuing to carry off rubble and debris from fallen skyscrapers, and Carter asks if they can talk inside to get away from the noise. When Talbot asks what it is she wants to discuss, Sam cuts her off, even when she tries to ask how she's feeling in regards to Jack. Clearly, those wounds haven't quite healed.

Far, far away, in the city hall on P6X-398, Daniel is shaking hands with the leader of the native diplomatic corps; they and Earth have just finished negotiating a plan to trade the Tau'ri with a healthy supply of trinium in exchange for military protection once the human fleet has been strengthened. It's not the most-concrete of promises, and definitely not the most-beneficial, but the reputation of the legendary SG-1 appears to have been enough to seal the deal. Sitting in the corner of the room, Mitchell yawns and stretches, glad that after the two hour ordeal, they can head back home and get some rest. Vala echoes that sentiment, muttering that a nice warm bath would be great, but Eaton quickly shoots down the notion, reminding her teammate that there's hardly any hot water to spare for such luxuries on Earth.

Nevertheless, it's time to go either way, and Mitchell tells his team to pack it up so they can leave. He turns to say good-bye to the native staff, but finds that the room is utterly empty except for them. Confused, as he heard no one move to go, Cameron calls out for someone, but gets no response. Noticing that something's up, Daniel looks around, also surprised as to the speed with which their hosts left. He frowns, not understanding what would cause them to depart so rapidly, but guesses that that may just be how their culture is; after all, they never asked SG-3 what the particulars of this world's etiquette were. As if to prove that this probably isn't a big deal, Eaton opens the door to the corridor beyond, and gestures at the myriad people buzzing about the city hall.

His nerves calmed, Mitchell leads the team into the hallway, heading down a flight of ornately-carved stairs and out the front doors to the busy metropolis around them. Early automobiles chug about, and young men and women in attire long-antiquated by Earth standards glance curiously at the offworlders. Daniel moves ahead when they reach the stargate, punching in the symbols for home and hitting the activation dome. But it is here that the unexpected happens; nothing. Frowning, Jackson guesses that he entered the wrong coordinates, and tries again. But the second time is the same as the first, and the portal remains dimmed and silent. Leaning on the console, Vala suggests that the new ISGC is just receiving some guests, and tells Daniel to try Chulak or Dakara instead. He does so, but finds the same result each time. Now the team is starting to really worry, and when one of the native dignitaries approaches, wondering why such a crowd has gathered around the gate, she is understandably suspicious of SG-1 with their stargate suddenly dead. Nonetheless, she says that it may just be a temporary problem, and offers the guest quarters at the mayor's mansion to them for the night, in the spirit of their new treaty. Seeing no alternative, Cameron accepts for the foursome, and they follow. Up in the window of a nearby building, though, someone is watching the Tau'ri once again...

That night, while Cameron and Daniel play a game of poker in the main parlor of the mayor's home, Eaton pulls off her gear and yanks on a light jacket and pants, stepping onto the large balcony overlooking the mansion grounds. The New Zealander smiles in the warm air, humming a quiet tune to herself and peering down at the alien flowers dotting the lawn. After a moment, the hum turns to soft singing, but oddly it's not in English, but Goa'uld. Suddenly, she stops short, tensing at the sound of someone behind her, and Rebbecca turns to see Vala standing there, laughing in disbelief. She asks how in the world the young Major learned that melody, to which a slightly-embarrassed Eaton replies that a Jaffa veteran of the Battle of Dakara passed through the Beta Site last year, and he brought with him a song that had been written to honor all those that had died in the name of freedom. Turning back toward the gardens, Eaton picks up where she left off, letting the strangely beautiful music find its own course. Vala gives her new teammate a strange look, then comes to stand next to her and joins in the chorus, her own voice blending perfectly with the Major's.

Inside, the sound wafts through an open window, and Daniel looks up in appreciation. Stretched out on a couch opposite, Mitchell remarks that there are some people that never cease to amaze him, then lays out a full house, clearly defeating Jackson's flush. The archaeologist sighs, muttering that he never was the bluffer of the team, and passes over a few dollar bills from his back pocket. Standing, he says that he's going to go ask for a glass of water, and Cameron tells him to hurry back; he wants more money, of course. Daniel leaves the main parlor and turns down a short hallway toward the kitchen, calling out to see if any of the mayor's family or staff are around. He enters the eatery to find it deserted, though, something he finds somewhat odd as it is just passing dinner time. Not too worried, he fills a glass from a nearby pitcher, then heads back into the hall, calling out once more.

Instead of returning straight to the main room, he ascends a close-by flight of stairs up to the second floor, which is, like the ground level, completely empty. The sound of Vala and Rebbecca's singing is louder now, but it's the only thing he can hear, and that gives him pause; they were told the mayor had an extensive group living at his mansion, and that tonight was to be slightly crowded, if anything. And yet, as far as Daniel can tell, the entire building is devoid of life save SG-1. He grabs his radio to tell the others that he has a bad feeling about this, but remembers that Eaton and Vala changed out of their uniforms and Mitchell left his harness in their bedroom. He has no way to warn them that something is horribly wrong here.

He runs down the corridor to the balcony, where he sees the two women still singing into the night. In the distance, the city lights can still be seen twinkling, primitive illumination but effective for its time. Daniel grabs Rebbecca and tells her that there's absolutely no one but them in the house, to which Eaton's eyes widen in shock. This revelation, coupled with their suspicions at the city hall, can't be mere coincidence, as they all know how this place should be packed with people tonight, and was just a scarce few minutes ago. No one noticed because they were so wrapped up in their activities, but now it's painfully obvious that they're in the middle of something here. And that feeling is only magnified when they hear a crash from within, and Mitchell's shouts are loud enough to echo outside. Not wasting a second, the three of them sprint back into the house.

(Second part of "Infiltration," see previous post for start and next post for end.)

                      Spoiler:
They come down the stairs to find the parlor half-destroyed, furniture blown to bits and tables splintered into dozens of pieces. The elegant chandelier hands by a thread from the ceiling, and the walls are filled with potmarks and massive holes. In the center of the room, Mitchell is crouched behind what remains of the couch, his left arm bleeding from a gash in his shoulder. Gasping, Eaton says she'll grab the first aid kit, but Daniel grabs her before she runs off, telling her to take Vala with her and to collect all their gear from the bedrooms before coming back; they'll need the protection and weapons, it looks like. Rebbecca nods, then signals for Vala to come with her, and the two make their way cautiously down the hall.

Advancing just as warily into the parlor itself, Jackson calls out to make sure Cameron is conscious, and the Lieutenant Colonel replies through gritted teeth that he is, just in a heck of a lot of pain. Kneeling beside him, Daniel rips a piece of fabric off of his shirt and presses it to Mitchell's wound, asking what just happened. The team leader sighs and admits that he really doesn't know; one second he was sitting there fiddling with his cards and staring off into space, and the next he found pulses of plasma flying down from all directions, shattering pottery and glass and blowing everything else apart. He dove behind the couch and called out for the others, and as soon as he heard the door to the balcony fly open, the attack stopped as quickly as it started. Obviously, someone doesn't want them here, but didn't want to have to face possible reinforcements. But that's where Mitchell doesn't understand it anymore—the people of this planet have barely gotten a grasp on gunpowder, so there's no way they could have plasma-based weapons. Something just doesn't add up.

As Eaton and Vala return, laden with combat gear and watching every step, Cameron adds that he thinks he sees a connection here. Everywhere they go, people suddenly vanish, and he never once saw his attackers, only the places where the blasts seemed to be coming from. Passing over P90s and vests, Rebbecca suggests that they're facing people with personal cloaking devices like those of the Sodan ("Babylon"), or even Sodan survivors themselves that blame them for the demise of their people. But Daniel, watching as Eaton bends to treat Mitchell's injury, says that they're jumping to conclusions. But either way, he guesses that they've figured out why the stargate was no longer functioning; their hidden attackers must have snuck up to the portal, unseen of course, and disconnected the DHD from the ring itself. Unfortunately, repairing that will be difficult without the know-how of someone like Samantha Carter, but if they can make it back to the city, they might be able to manage it.

Vala agrees, and she moves toward the other side of the room, saying that they should get moving immediately then. She pulls open the front door, and immediately leaps aside as blue plasma punches through the wooden barrier just inches away. Daniel and Eaton drop what they're doing and move behind cover, firing off round after round into the darkness outside, but the bursts keep on coming. From her place beside the entrance, Vala shouts that getting out this way seems oddly unlikely, and asks if there's another way to leave the mansion that they know of. Mitchell replies that he remembers their hosts mentioning an access road that leads down through the gardens to the outskirts of the city, and Daniel remarks that that alternative sounds excellent.

Helping Cameron to his feet, Eaton leads a retreat down a nearby hallway to the courtyard. Then Jackson takes point, guiding the team across a short bridge and into the flower-filled garden beyond, through which a winding path winds down a small hill to the city, as promised. But as soon as they step foot into the floral-lined path, more plasma whizzes down at them from the balconies of the mansion. Shouting that this is ridiculous, Daniel returns fire as he can, and Vala unsuccessfully tries to deter the assailants with a grenade. Hoping to find some solace farther down, she hurries after her teammates.

On Earth, Talbot has returned to the makeshift ISGC, finding Col. Taylor has encountered his first problem as head of the facility. As she enters the room that has become the commander's office, he exclaims that he never should have given up his peaceful, uneventful job at the Beta Site; SG-1 is six hours overdue for their scheduled check-in, and all attempts to dial P6X-398 have failed. The Tok'ra have informed him that the planet has not been attacked by the Der'kal, and a series of diagnostics have confirmed that the problem is with the offworld gate, not Earth's. Curious, Talbot asks what the team's mission was, thinking that perhaps they were trapped in a battle of some sort, but Taylor shoots that done immediately. After all, they were just negotiating for some trinium on a planet historically friendly to visitors from other worlds. Nodding, Danielle says that they can't spare any ships right now of their own, but suggests that Taylor contact the Alliance and ask that a scout ship be sent to investigate. Agreeing that it sounds like the best option, the Colonel grabs his phone and watches his friend depart.

On P6X-398 itself, SG-1 is taking shelter inside a small gardener's shed deep within the mayoral gardens so Mitchell's injury can be properly taken care of. The city appears closer out the window, scarcely a mile or so away, and Daniel stands by the doorway to keep a lookout. Coming over, Vala asks Jackson what she thinks is after them, and he shakes his head in reply, saying that he honestly has no idea. There's something familiar about this whole situation, but he can't quite put his finger on it, and it's driving him insane. Smiling weakly, Vala tells him that she has the utmost confidence in his ability to figure it out in the long-run, just as she always has. Snorting, she admits that when she first met Daniel, she thought he was an arrogant moron, thinking he could take her on single-handedly ("Prometheus Unbound"). And while they've had their fair share of spats over the years, she really has come to respect and care about him, and she realized that most of all on the Hak'tyl over Balyana ("Dark Tide"), when the only thing she could think of with that alien about to impale her was—

—suddenly, interrupting the emotional moment, the rear wall of the shed is reduced to splinters as bursts of blue light rip through the wooden frame. Cursing angrily, Mitchell grabs Eaton's arm and pulls himself up, ordering the team to move out again immediately. But this time, streams of plasma are coming from all sides, making it clear that they have nowhere to go. The four SG-1 members stand backs to one another in a square, their sub-machineguns raised but unable to see their adversaries. Slowly, the incoming plasma stops, and there is silence as the humans stare out into the darkness, trying to discern what's going on. Daniel furrows his brow, believing that the truth is just on the tip of his tongue, but still finds himself incapable of recalling the information he needs to finish it.

After a tense moment, the air begins to shimmer, and a brown-green, four legged insectoid figure appears, carrying a strange plasma-cannon that has been mounted onto one of its arms. It only takes Daniel a split-second to remember one of the SGC's early crises, where a few such beings infiltrated the compound and nearly destroyed it in a plan to eradicate human hosts. Glancing at the others, he correctly identifies their attackers as Re'tu, probably rebels, who exist 180-degrees out of visual phase, making them essentially invisible. When a group of them attacked the SGC in its second year of operation ("Show and Tell"), SG-1 thought that they solved the problem, but apparently that isn't quite the case.

As more Re'tu appear all around them, Eaton asks how it is that they're becoming visible if they exist out of the visual plane. Vala guesses that they simply developed the reverse of what they know as cloaking technology; whereas most races build devices to hide them, these people could simply develop ones that reveal them. Stepping forward, the first Re'tu to appear replies, in extremely-jagged speech, that Vala is correct in her assumption, and that his faction have spent many long years perfecting these anti-cloaking bands they wear so that they may interact with others more easily, the same reason why he labored so long to be able to speak some Galactic. He goes on to explain that with the ever-present threat of the Goa'uld, he and his followers have had to move quickly, annihilating human colonies as efficiently and quietly as possible so as not to attract the attention of the System Lords.

Here is where SG-1's members all give one another a confused glance. Mitchell slowly points out that the Goa'uld were defeated years ago when the Replicators invaded the galaxy ("Reckoning, Part 2"). The System Lords as a powerful entity ceased to exist, replaced now by the budding Alliance of Great Races attempting to repel yet-another invasion at the hands of the Der'kal. The English-speaking Re'tu balks at this, insisting that their ancient enemies are growing more powerful by the day, that is why they have had to continuously step up their attacks on human worlds. They have seen the war tearing the Milky Way apart, and it is evidence that the Goa'uld have become incredibly potent, and this only proves that their plan to eradicate all humans to deprive the symbiotes of hosts is sorely needed. But Cameron repeats that the System Lords no longer exist, and that the war raging right now was precipitated by the Der'kal, another race entirely.

Shouldering her rifle, Eaton asks how the Re'tu can not know the Goa'uld have fallen, and Daniel explains that there were two factions of their kind; the Re'tu Central Authority, which controlled most of the population and believed in staging a traditional war against their foes, and the rebels, who were an extremest group not unlike Islamic radicals on Earth, believing that the only way to win was to infiltrate and destroy human societies, depriving the Goa'uld of hosts and killing them through attrition. Earth hasn't had much contact with either, but from what he's heard from Alliance Intelligence over the past few years, the Central Authority is aware of the System Lord collapse and rebuilding its civilization. The rebels must never have gotten the memo, too preoccupied with planning attack after attack.

(End of "Infiltration," see previous two posts for start.)

                        Spoiler:
Regardless, the leader of the Re'tu pack raises its plasma cannon, saying that they have spent many months trying to track the movements of the ones known as SG-1, who foiled their attempts to wipe out Earth's populace so long ago. And ever since, the Tau'ri have done nothing but embolden humans across the galaxy, making them more-active and better-equipped, ever increasing the difficulty in wiping them out. But at long last, they've been cornered, and with the stargate deactivated, there's no possibility to anyone coming to their rescue. It was so easy, sneaking up behind the persons that could have warned the team and simply removing them, grabbing them and pulling them into invisibility. This was almost too good of an opportunity to be true. Glancing around, Vala whispers that if they take the first shot, they might be able to kill enough of them to drive the Re'tu off, but Rebbecca reminds her that they can just shift back out of view the second they see aggression and then they'd be dead no matter what. This really could be it.

Then, as out of the blue as anything else seems to be this night, a stream of yellow plasma rips through the ruined gardener's hut, catching three of the aliens full in the chest and blasting them into the ground. The other few glance skyward in time to see a tel'tak decloaking and firing what look like small staff cannons affixed to rotating turrets in its belly. Knowing that this could be their one opportunity, Mitchell shouts to open fire, and the team easily dispatches two of the remaining Re'tu, though the last one manages to deactivate its anti-cloaking device and vanish before they can bring it down, as well.

The immediate threat gone, Mitchell grabs his radio and thanks the pilot of the descending cargo ship for the assist. A Tok'ra agent replies that it was no trouble; he was dispatched by the High Council upon Earth's request to investigate the team's silence and unreachable status, and they're just lucky that he came in one of the newly-upgraded tel'tak being prepared for travel into Der'kal-held space. The Tok'ra goes on to say that he'll set down just outside the city so as not to crush the mayoral gardens, and that he will also inform the local government of his presence and mission. But Daniel interjects that telling any officials may be difficult, as the Re'tu who attacked them probably killed them after kidnapping them. Either way, their savior says that he'll do what he can, and tells SG-1 to join him at the foot of the mansion grounds as soon as they can, and that he'll transmit a message to the ISGC telling Earth that their golden boys and girls are safe.

A few hours later, the stargate in the makeshift ISGC's gate room comes online, and SG-1 steps through looking worn but in one piece. Colonel Taylor is at the foot of the ramp waiting for them, and confirms that they received the message from the Tok'ra detailing what happened on P6X-398. As soon as they got to the part about the Re'tu attack, SG-8 was sent to Retalia to inform the Central Authority that their rebel faction was still at large and had probably destroyed several dozen small human settlements on various worlds, to which they got a pledge to finish reigning in the insurgent group and restore peace between humans and all their people.

Mitchell breathes a sigh of relief, glad that it's over, but expresses some guilt over the fact that a good number of natives on 398 had to die in the fighting. Misguided though it was, the Re'tu rebels believed that they were doing a good thing, but there's one spot of hope that may still exist. As Vala points out, the Tok'ra repaired the gate on the planet, meaning that the one survivor of the alien strike force could return to the rebels and tell them that the Goa'uld are no more, and as long as they consider that, there may still be a chance for redemption. Seeing that all is well, Taylor tells the team that there's something else they should probably know, and suggest that they head upstairs and turn on a TV. A few stations have been assembled in the month or so since they retook Earth, and they're all broadcasting the event taking place at the United Nations right now. Interested, the foursome head off, leaving Taylor to stare after them, a small smile on his face.

The team comes up a flight of stairs nearby to find themselves in what was probably once a reception area, with several marines gathered around a television set watching a news update. SG-1 slowly moves closer as the soldiers step aside to make room, and they all stare at shock at the scene inside the General Assembly Hall; Doctor—or Chief of State—Talbot is standing at the speaker's podium, addressing a crowd of civilians, military personnel, dignitaries, and journalists alike. She's here to introduce the new commander of the Free People of Earth's fleet, a new position created to better handle the unanticipated development space-based warships have had on modern militaries. In light of that, she doesn't think anyone will mind if she appoints a USAF officer as her chosen candidate, and Colonel Samantha Carter smiles confidently into the camera, promising, just as she did a lifetime ago as she withdrew from the planet's orbit, that she will bring the fight to the Der'kal and finally finish this war.

Stunned to see their old friend finally back, SG-1 can only watch in happiness, and Vala hooks her arm cautiously around Daniel's, pulling him closer. Eaton and Mitchell exchange a look of approval for Sam and the good job they know she will do, and the scene slowly darkens with the first real rebirth of hope for peace in a long, long time.

I lost interest by the midseason of season 3 on Horizon. It wasn't quenching my thirst for All Thing Stargate.
