My guess would be that she had some office space, possibly shared with others. She most likely would have spent a fair bit of time in a lab, possibly off-site.

Could she look up Jack's file there? Or would a little computer hacking be in order?
She doesn't strike me as the type who would do something unprofessional like that (either the looking up or the hacking to do so), especially if this is before the movie. Carter was always a pretty straight arrow about stuff like that, from what I can tell.

Is there a cafeteria she visits? What is the security protocol for coming and going in the building? Is there a specific part of the building she would likely be assigned to? Are there labs for her to work out of?
The security setup is quite likely to be different now, in the post-9/11 world, than it would have been in the early 1990s when she would have been working there. Just something to consider.

in the early 90's i can see an ID card system for most of it, just flash the card and it'd indicate the clearence you were allowed. I think - giong by the tv show, there are 5 rings, A-E, and, let's say teh A is the outer ring, if your card was good for B ring, then you'd be allowed E-B, but not A unless you were escorted by someone with A ring access.

the more sensitive areas would likely have scanners of some sort. palm scanners, retina scanners, card scanners, a combo of biometric and electronic.

I would also imagine that there's a cafeteria of some sort for each ring, simply because the place is huge and complex. And I can't see the A ringers schlepping all teh way to the E wing to eat or vice versa.

i'd also imagine as the clearance goes up, so do the digs....standard institutional cafeteria vs higher end VIP dining.

If you look at the aerials of the place you can see 5 (?) corridors that connect all 5 rings with open air space between each of the sections - so plenty of windows.

your best bet could be to see if the history channel or discovery channel or national geographic ever did a story on the pentagon. it'd likely give you enough of hte basics.

thousands of people work there, IIRC, so I'd imagine it like an air force base...in that you have the 'common' areas that most people can access and the high security places where only a few can get to.

I didn't mean that the way it sounded SF. Here's what I'm trying to do:
-Once they got the Stargate working, the military took over.
-Jack got a team together to go through the Stargate.
-Sam was not on the team (but feels she should have been). But she's privy to the reports on the mission because of continuing research (she actually states in Children of the Gods that she practically memorized the reports).
-Her own curiosity about the team, the mission, and Jack O'Neill (as the CO) sends her on an information gathering spree. In the interest of continuing research, of course.
-Jack had to have somewhat of a reputation that others in the Pentagon may have mentioned to her ("Oh? Jack O'Neill?...well let me tell you..."). Or that simple review of his file may have revealed to her.

I hope that made sense...I'm super tired right now. Get back with you tomorrow.

I doubt she'd have been privy to his file, and she strikes me as too professional to have tried to hack her way into it. However, I can possibly see her overhearing something about Jack's reputation. He likely would have some. I can even help to flesh it out for you a bit, if you like, and in such a way as to make the exchange sound realistic, since I'm obviously working with material from Jack's past myself. Let me know if you'd be interested.

Sweet dreams, sara! Wish I could help you, but I know exactly diddley in that area.

Got a quick question about SGA, not to derail from sara:

            Lorne's XOs:

First, there was Reed, then there was (for a short time in S4) Kemp. Anyone know when Reed left? Was he replaced by Kemp or does the chain of command allow for multiple XOs under Lorne or what? Each of those men was able to lead their own team, as well, so I am confused. My fic has Reed in it, but it's set in S4 & I want to be sure some editing is not in order.

Given that she knew Catherine Langford in "Torment of Tantalus" well enough to share a big hug, I like to assume that the two women met while Sam was at the Pentagon working on the Stargate project. You might want to put something in about that.

Already on it! The part I've already written is a phone conversation between the two of them. Catherine is telling her that she's not going on that first mission. Sam's pissed (not at Catherine). I knew that Sam would have had to work with Catherine as she was almost completely in charge in the beginning of the movie (before Daniel got the gate to work). Thanks for the thought, hedwig -and the reminder to go back and watch that ep.!

I'm a relatively new member, so I apologize in advance if there is a designated thread I haven't seen that deals specifically with this.

After watching the last episode of Stargate: Universe, I was left with a sense of loss. I wanted closure, I wanted more episodes, but most of all, I wanted more character development and to find what the ultimate mission of Destiny is and what it leads to. Since I don't particularly trust anyone other than Universe's writer(s) to further the story--and since I'm inherently skeptical of nearly all the propositional ideas of how the series would continue as proposed by fans--I've begun writing my own fanfic to continue the series. My goal is to remain as similar to the character development and disposition as given by the writer(s) while advancing the plot in exciting, yet conservative, ways. IE; I find the popular insistence
                    Spoiler:
that Eli will go bat@#$% insane by being alone on the ship to be divergent from the feel of the storyline and from the development of his character. I also recall seeing someone suggest that Eli becomes a cannibal and feeds on the sleeping crew.

To me, almost every suggestion I've seen isn't even relatively close to the [I]feel[I] of Universe. In my opinion (which is obviously biased), the fanfic I've begun writing as an extension to the show is more conservative with the style of the writer(s), and is more enjoyable and believable because of it.

Although it's difficult to translate the show into a novelette form, I think it would still be enjoyable and fit into the current perception of the Stargate: Universe . . . universe.

Before publishing the first episode I've written, I'd prefer to have 3-5 people read through my initial draft with the goal of heavily critiquing both the grammar, presentation, character representation, and plot of the episode. I want to know if others feel like it would fit in the current progression of Stargate: Universe and if it feels right to them.

If you'd like to volunteer to proofread/critique the episode, please reply to this post (which I'll check periodically) or send me a PM with an appropriate title. I'll probably limit it to 5 people maximum, so if there's any demand, it'll be first come, first serve.

                    Synopsis:
                    Spoiler:
Eli is alone on Destiny. The last stasis pod will not activate. As Eli tries to fix the pod, he encounters a problem that threatens the entire crew. Eli must resolve it, or Destiny will fall short and drift through the intergalactic gap, but with power siphoning off, his own time grows short.

Actually, I think you're in kind of the wrong thread. What you should do is make a thread of your own, and put the same post from above as its first post. That way you have a thread specifically for your own project. Lots of the threads here in the fanfic subforum are geared to specific stories or story projects.

                      Good luck.

I'm rather confused about ZPM's and what character should do about them. Their power is rather vague, but I do know they aren't rechargeable.

In my fic, Atlantis is moved back to the Pegasus Galaxy (though nowhere near the same spot it used to be). After that, there is the issue of funding and trade (especially food). It'd look sill to address those and not the energy problem, but I'm not sure how to address the problem.

Would it be best to assume the ZPM's have enough power , so long as they don't go on any more 'trips' or would it be best to look for a new power source?
Price for Pain What do you mean violence isn't the answer?

I can't remember the name of the ep, but it was when Ronon was part of the team, perhaps in S3(?)--the one where "Rod" joins them from a parallel universe thanks to an experiment by Rodney and we find out he has a sister because Jeannie has to come help him fix it. Anyway, that ep sort of describes where the power of ZPMs comes from.

I think you are right that they are not rechargeable, however, hence their constant search for ZPMs. A new power source could be fun! You could even make it a "green" Atlantis and have them use water, wind or sun (or a combination) to generate their power. Just a random, early-morning, no-coffee-yet thought.

Atlantis uses three ZPMs for full power, to lift off from planets and intergalactic voyages. Once in orbit, one ZPM could power the city through interstellar voyages, though with reduced life-support.

Once back in Pegasus, the team could take 2 ZPMs off-line to hold in reserve as a single ZPM could see to the expedition's normal needs for several decades at least. Unless, they find more working Aurora-class ships or outposts, the ZPMs they now have are it. The ZPMs for the journey to Earth were handed over by Todd who stole them from the Asuran homeworld just before it was destroyed by the combined Earth, Wraith and Traveller task force.

Of course the Ancients could make ZPMs as needed and presumably Atlantis has the facilities to make them, I'm guessing they haven't found them yet, or it is in a flood damaged section. To say nothing that no-one from Earth understands how ZPMs are put together yet.

Just remembered something else, in The Return Parts 1 and 2, an Aurora class ship fully functional but without a hyperdrive and more importantly fully manned was discovered in between the Milky Way and Pegasus. The crew was rescued by the Daedalus and returned to Atlantis whereupon they evicted the expedition. They later lost the city to the Asurans. After the expedition destroyed the occupying Asuran replicators, the city had three full ZPMs. Whether the extra ZPMs were puilled from ships or fabricated as needed is not known.

The IOA puiled two of the ZPMs. One to power the control chair found in Antarctica and the other was fitted to the Odyssey, as that was the primary starship used by Earth during the war against the Ori. That ZPM is still presumably still fitted to the Odyssey. The chair and its ZPM was relocated to Area 51 and was destroyed during the Wraith attack on Earth which also brought Atlantis back to the planet from which it left for Pegasus.
