As to what Jack gave R'ya'c (however we're punctuating that these days), I've always assumed it was an antibiotic/fever reducer/anti-inflammatory combination and that he mixed it in water to make it easier to swallow (although I'll bet it tasted vile).

Sometimes in hospitals, if a doctor thinks it might help they will give a patient a small alcoholic drink. That happened to my Dad when he was in the hospital. His doctor asked him if he ever had a drink; Dad said yes; later with his dinner, there was a shot glass of whiskey with his dinner. Dad said that really helped him relax, and he appreciated the doctor even more for doing it.

My step dad's an alcoholic. When he was in the hospital they brought him beer. It was better to let him have the alcohol than tax his body with detox and the surgery.

Once when my grandfather was in the hospital, he was given a bottle of beer every night. Same thing -- he was accustomed to it and it helped him relax, so the doc said, "Why not?" and ordered it up for him.

I've swam in several small forest lakes as a kid (though that was in Sweden). While they can be fairly deep (like 4 m, perhaps), Jack's lake doesn't look big. I doubt it is more than 2 m deep, or so, even on the deepest spot. (2 m = 6.5 feet)
