I have a question about the American school system. I know the English school system is similar - but I don't get that either - I've had a Scottish education my whole life.

In Scotland we start primary school at 5. We do 7 years of primary school, (until we're 11, we're 12 the year we start high school) before we do 4 years of mandatory high school then a further optional 2 years.

The whole Elementary, Middle, Junior High and High school has me stumped. As well as Freshman etc.

Can someone explain this to me? I'm currently writing a story where one of my characters is 8 and the other is 11. Where about in school would they be, and would they be in the same type of school (elementary, middle or whatever)?

I hope this makes sense, my head is a bit mushy tonight.

Elemenary school is usually 1st through 5th grade, Junior High is 6th through 8th grade (sometimes 5th is considered JH, but rarely), and High school is 9th-12th grade.

They would be in 2nd and 5th grade.

The education system in my country is completely different too so I always use this wikipedia page for comparison. The ages especially make it easier to see which grade comes when.
