Your science expert is incorrect. What prevents the tips of a very long pair of scissors from closing faster than the speed of light is not special relativity, but elasticity. A pair of scissors long enough to close at a speed close to the speed of light would have to be made of a material stiffer (greater Shear modulus) than any known material.
