I agree with you. Whenever a show talks about current events, it turns me off. I'd rather not hear it in the shows I watch (just like Maj. Clanger said, it's nice to escape reality), and I'd also prefer not hearing the actors' opinions on the subject.

If the show started espousing liberal philosophy, I'd lose all respect for it. On the other hand, if it started espousing conservative philosophy, there's a good chance everyone else would lose all respect for it. Real life politics in Stargate is lose-lose.

Really? I laughed so hard I nearly needed stiches! Personally I wouldn't mind if it was mentioned in the proper context like it was in Uninvited. It fit the scene nicely.

Have you actually watched the first 5 seasons of SG1? It used to be one of the most liberal science fiction television shows I've ever watched. Back in the days they repeatedly said the end doesn't justify the means, anyway.
The show has definitely been letting on both the liberal philosophy of the early days and the (rather disappointing for ol' liberal me) more conservative view in later years. they just avoided sticking a big neon "this happens in our world to" tsticker on it.

And I thought the Uninvited joke was the best thing about the episode TBH. Well, that and the duck impression. And the poker game in the end
Pinky, are you thinking what I'm thinking?

Pardon me. I should say 'socialist' instead of 'liberal,' for clarity.

As for the Uninvited joke - I thought it was hilarious, too. ^_^

                (excerpt)
: So just how is China justifying signing billions of USD over to the US for the Stargate Programs?

Woolsey: They say they're "loaning" us the money for our "War on Terror."

: Who would buy China loaning America billions of dollars for a war they have no apparent interest in?

                Woolsey: You'd be surprised.

I think this is rather clever (in a funny sort of way). I don't think Ripple was saying anything pro or con about the War on Terror, not stating an opinion on US policy, nothing of the sorts.
~ just a way of saying that the SGC operates in current time and the money comes from somewhere...
Last I heard, China was a member of the IOA? Had a vested interested and all. How do you explain tons of money flowing from China to a US-based project like the SGC?
Two possibilities: the one above and Wal-Mart bail-outs.

Since the above seems to rattle people's chains, how about the Wal-Mart theme?

...or it could be explained by the amounts of debt America is in and has had to borrow money from China.

Can we talk about something better? Like the progressive farming models undertaken in the PG.

Well if the war on terror has these kind of soldiers we're in trouble.

I think if I was on an alien city in another galaxy with bloodsucking wraith that wanted to eat me...the last thing on my mind would be the price of gas, terrorist in 3rd world countries and China.

                        My concern would be:

Wraith vaccine to make me immune to the feeding process

Where I parked the puddle jumper

Life time supply of batteries and ammo

Daily living supplies...to last a long time

And most important....a case a expensive chocolate.

well, the awful make-up job on Clone!Carson and his toupee-looking hair wouldn't be much of a concern either, but it does get fans talking.

                          just stirring the pot

But Woolsey seems to have a wine supply, so I'm assuming someone's got a lifetime stash of chocolate.
                          And peanut butter.

Heck, they could probably hold the shield together with all the peanut butter I'd be bringing along.

I'd also worry about missing the latest SGA show, or whatever their equivalent would be. How's the internet access and who's getting voted off Hell's Kitchen next week?

Who's feeding my dog? (Did McKay seriously leave his cat with a neighbor 4+ years ago? that's crazy!)

And then there are the job worries, some of which you've mentioned... space vampires, exploding tumors, wraith-worshippers, growing a ship out of my belly, all sorts of job worries.

Speaking of job worries, I'm outta here.

I hadn't noticed, I don't know if he does wear a toupee, but David "McKay" Hewlett claims that the producers make him wear a toupee and I believe a girdle.
