Film and TV production lagging in Canada

It's all quiet on the northern front as SAG talks continue

    By Etan Vlessing

    June 27, 2008, 04:11 PM ET

TORONTO -- Canadian studio operators are eyeing the horizon for U.S. film and TV shoots like sailors lost at sea as the SAG contract talks in Los Angeles put a damper on production here.

"The studios that we're talking to about potential for work have all made it quite clear that they are not going to be greenlighting pictures until the SAG (deal) is worked out," Toronto Film Studios president Ken Ferguson said Friday.

The one Canadian bright spot production-wise is Vancouver, where U.S. TV series provide welcome work for worried production crews.

"We feel fortunate to have the business hat we have, but we're concerned that people might be out of work again, which isn't good for the industry at any time," said Peter Leitch, president of Mammoth and North Shore studios in Vancouver.

The Mammoth and North Shore studios have "Night at the Museum 2" and U.S. series including ABC Family's "Kyle XY," Sci Fi Channel's "Stargate Atlantis" and USA Network's "Psych" in production after recent renewals.

Studio operators report some exploratory phone calls from U.S. producers anticipating a possible return to production here in the fall, but the consensus is that producers, by their current inactivity, are sending a message to SAG about their resolve.

SGA - TV Guide Online: Momoa's New 'Do Is a Don't, Says Stargate + POLL:

      From TV Guide Online:

      TV GUIDE NEWS

      Today's News: Our Take

Momoa's New 'Do Is a Don't, Says Stargate

His character, Ronon, still has his massive mane, but Jason Momoa, who plays the studly warrior on Stargate Atlantis, has shed his dreads — all five pounds of them.

"After six-plus years, my head and neck were starting to hurt a lot," says Momoa, adding that all the hair kept him from wearing a bike helmet and keeping his balance while surfing. Execs at the Sci Fi Channel "didn’t want me to cut 'em," so now the actor has to wear a wig of dreads on screen. But, he adds, "The wig weighs more than my own hair, which sucks. I’d love to get rid of it — and see what the fans think!" — Ileane Rudolph

POLL: What do you think of Momoa's new look?

                        By Steve West: 2008-07-01

The new season of Stargate Atlantis is set to include a few landmark moments: not the least of which is the show’s 100th episode. The Stargate universe surprised many people when SG-1 became a decade long success story for the Sci Fi Network. We had a chance to speak with the new leader, Richard Woolsey, who is played by Robert Picardo along with executive producer Joseph Mallozzi. We’ll have the full transcript up for your dissection and perusal as soon as we can. In the meantime here are a few highlights.

                        **snippage**

This new season of Stargate Atlantis will feature all of the action and adventure that makes the series exciting to fans. Catch “Search and Destroy” on Sci Fi Wednesday, July 9th at 10:00pm EST.

(I just checked SciFi's schedule, SGA season five premiere is still listed as Friday, July 11 at 10pm, with a repeat at Midnight.)

Bill Nye The Science Guy Comes To Atlantis:

Picardo was very excited for the cameo role of his friend and TV scientist, Bill Nye the science guy. On Atlantis he will also be playing a scientist that visits the crew looking for something important. That sounds like the alien race mentioned before, fingers crossed for Bill Nye in Alien prosthetics.

                            Episode 01: Search and Rescue

                            Spoiler:

An injured Sheppard is trapped alongside Ronon beneath the rubble of Michael’s collapsed compound. Trapped in another debris pocket, McKay and Lorne realize that a subspace burst has already reached Michael. Light years away, Michael’s flagship Wraith Cruiser hurtles towards the compound. Imprisoned onboard, a pregnant Teyla begs Kanann, the father of her baby, to help save her. Carter leads a rescue mission to the planet. Her team succeeds in digging up McKay and Lorne, but Ronon and a rapidly deteriorating Sheppard are buried far deeper in the rubble. With Michael and his hybrids on their way back to deal with intruders, and the Daedalus already enroute, the question becomes: Who will reach them first?

                            Episode 02: The Seed

                            Spoiler:
When Dr. Keller fails to report for her morning shift, concerned team members investigate and are shocked by what they discover: Jennifer, unconscious in her quarters - a mysterious web of tendrils attached to her body. Suspecting her condition may be linked to her research into the wraith data recovered from Michael’s lab, the team makes the decision to bring Beckett out of stasis. The beloved doctor leads the medical investigation while Sheppard and co. are quarantined under suspicion that they may have been exposed to the same virus that has affected Keller. As Beckett struggles to find a solution, the alien organism grows, creeping out into the adjoining corridors toward the main power grid. With Atlantis itself now under threat, Woolsey is ultimately faced with a decision that could cost Keller her life.

                            Episode 03: Broken Ties

                            Spoiler:
Ronon is ambushed during an off-world mission and awakens, much later, a prisoner of his former friend, Tyre. The fellow Satedan, it turns out, has fallen on hard times since they last crossed paths. Abandoned by the wraith he once served, he is undergoing a physiological and psychological withdrawal from the reverse-feeding process once granted to him as a wraith worshiper. But he believes he has come up with a way to win back the respect of his former masters: by delivering them Ronon. Intent on turning their defiant captive, the wraith begin their process of reverse-feeding - stealing Ronon’s life, bringing him to the brink of death, then restoring his youth. Again, and again, and again. A tip, meanwhile, leads the team to an abandoned village. But Ronon and the wraith are long gone, and the only remnant of their former presence is a seriously injured Tyre who may be their only hope of rescuing their friend.

                            Episode 04: The Daedalus Variations

                            Spoiler:

When a mysterious, duplicate Daedalus appears in orbit over Atlantis, the team is dispatched to investigate. Once aboard the deserted and severely damaged ship, the team discovers an ominous video message from the former captain. But before they can make sense of the situation, the ship is propelled into an alternate reality. As McKay tries to figure out what is going on, the ship continues to jump through various alternate realities, encountering an alien armada and the blistering heat of an expanding sun. Worse - the team realizes that if they don’t find a way back to their reality soon, they risk being lost forever.

SGA - Multichannel News: Season Five Premiere: A Summer Space Romp:

From Multichannel News' TV Crush column by Mary McNamara:

'Stargate Atlantis' Season Five Premiere: A Summer Space Romp

                                July 1, 2008

Heading into its fifth season, launching July 11@10p., SCI FI Channel's Stargate Atlantis is enjoying something of a resurgence. The series concluded the previous year on a ratings upswing, and at some point during the upcoming season, the series will hit the landmark 100th episode.

First, a word about the Stargate Atlantis opening credits. I heart the opening credits.

                                Video link

The season five premiere, penned by executive producer Martin Gero, lets viewers bask in a happy place - at least for now. A little warmth? A happy resolution? What a unique concept. (Battlestar's Ron Moore: are you listening?)

I'm pretty burned out at this point with the conspiracies within conspiracies, death, destruction, and the relentless drumbeat of amoral, and/or despicable, characters.

                                **snippage**

So what does this mean for Atlantis as its fifth season premiere approaches? Can it go 10 seasons like it‘s big brother? To be perfectly honest - it’s highly unlikely....as a show moves past its fifth season, the odds are stacked against it. Ultimately, it comes down to the numbers - less the ratings and more the bottom line. The longer a show is on the air, the more expensive it is to produce. Throw in the resurgence of the Canadian dollar, once pegged at 63 cents to the U.S. greenback, it now hovers at par, an approximate 37 cent bump which adds a significant hit to the production budget.....

....And yet who knows what the future holds. WE certainly didn‘t nine years ago when we expected production on SG-1 to conclude after it‘s fifth season. But if and when Atlantis does come to an end, I don’t think it should be cause for anger or resentment. Both MGM and SciFi have been great supporters of the show and, if you go by SG-1’s example, fans can be assured that the end of the series will not be the end of Atlantis. Like SG-1, it will live on in longer form dvd releases.
