Well I asked 2 Grodin questions on the Martin Gero Q&A and got my answers.

3.A Grodin question. Joe has already answered that it's unlikely but in theory possible we could see a return of Grodin. Would you personally like to see him come back in any way?

4. Also, rather moot now but is bugging me - please indulge a poor Grodin fan for a moment. We know Grodin had a doctorate but what exactly was his specialism and duty on Atlantis?

3. Maybe in a dream or something, but he’s dead…and that’s how he should stay.

4. Grodin was a science office, like McKay, who role was to be the Atlantis tech guy…the “on-world” version of McKay (job wise).

Not quite the answer I was looking for, as in what he had a doctorate but it's something. Nice to know it's always possible we could see him even if he's staying dead. As well if we're not getting anymore canon details then I think we should write backstory etc, lots of Grodin fic! Who's with me? Anyone up for writing Grodinfic?
