RR part 3

Mr. Woolsey stared at the Colonel in shock.

"You what?"

John stood up from his seat, the only sign of emotion on his face an angry glower. "You heard me. I quit. I'm leaving. I'm going back to Earth."

"...Colonel, you can't just make a decision like this. As a member of the US military, you have the obligation to--"

John stepped forward, his eyes burning with an irrational and barely controlled rage. "Actually, Mister Woolsey, I have no obligation to remain in this galaxy. There are plenty of Earthside bases that would love to have me."

Woolsey was taken aback by the sudden change in the Colonel's attitude, involuntarily retreating a few steps when John made his angry advance. Raising his gaze from the floor, Woolsey locked eyes with John and spoke.

"Regardless, this is a very big decision. I wouldn't want you to make it while you mind may be...clouded...by recent unfortunate events. I'm giving you two weeks mandatory leave. You may take it where ever you wish."

John stared at him for what seemed like an eternity, as if contemplating whether to leave or inflict bodily injury on the unfortunate man. Fortunately for Woolsey, he chose for the former option. He broke eye contact and abruptly whirled around, leaving the man's office and walking swiftly down the stairs to the rest of the city.

After seeing the Colonel disappear into the corridors beyond, Woolsey turned toward the gateroom and wiped his hand wearily across his face with a sigh. After remaining there in thought for a few moments, he raised his head and walked toward to the mostly empty control room. A technician rose from his seat to meet Woolsey as he entered.

"What is it?" the technician asked.

"An issue has come up,” Woolsey said in an odd tone. "We'll have to expand the simulation to include Earth."

The technician nodded. "I'll tell the others."
