    What does that mean?

I'm thinking it's meant to be a joke... a poke at Rodney's constant self-aggrandizing. Why shower praise on the character when he does it enough himself. That said, someone needs to give him the accolades he deserves as I don't really see any of the other characters on the show doing it. So, we McKay thunkers take it upon ourselves to extol his gorgeous geeky virtues in defiance of the norm.

And... um... yeah, I should get my over-caffeinated self back to digging through satellite code and get off this.. uh.. soapbox.

To quote an Atlantis fan fic writer (written from Sheppard's first person POV):

"I remember the very first few days with the self-proclaimed wonder that was McKay. Ford had said to me, “That guy thinks the sun shines out of his ass, doesn’t he?” Ford was young. And often enough the young didn’t have a ****ing clue. When someone is so eager to tell the world how wonderful he is, it’s only because he doesn’t for one minute believe it to be true. Not really, not down deep. Not where it counts. Sometimes a guy like that needs some help seeing himself for what he really is."

I agree with that assessment of McKay. He's a beautifully complex character. How can we not speak of him in awe? And beyond that, DH deserves much posted applause for bringing McKay so perfectly to life.
So don't expect the adoration to stop any time soon.

Yes, but that doesn't mean we can't appreciate him too
And nothing wrong with appreciating David Hewlett either- he deserves all the praise we give him.

Yes, we all know that Rodney only blows his own trumpet becuase he's fishing for compliments, reasurrance because if he's not a genius then what worth has he... poor little woobie with no art.

Oooh, is that from one of Koscheckas fics?! I love her fics, great for Sheppard and McKay - just like the best fics for SGa I've ever read and I read alot...

I totally agree with that statement about McKay. It's so very true. There's a lot of insecurity underneath that overconfident and egotistical facade. I think thats one of the things that makes Rodney so interesting to watch and is something that gives David some awesome material to work with.

Wordity McWord to that. I remember reading that particular fic and thinking it was a spot on assessment of McKay. People who are truly confident and secure in themselves and their talents and abilities, rarely ever make mention of it because they don't need anyone to re-inforce it. They don't need to seek praise or assurance elsewhere. They let their abilities speak for themselves. Look at Sam Carter. It is a testament to McKay's insecurity that he does praise himself so much, normally someone as incredibly smart and talented as himself wouldn't need to. That's why I believe those in Atlantis, like Weir, Beckett, Zelenka, Grodin who have spent quite a bit of time getting to know McKay are as fond of him as they are because they clearly understand that his ego is a cover for his insecurity. Sheppard, as the fanfic writer points out, has been fairly quick to see that also. It has a lot to do with why I find McKay so appealing because under it all you just know he's a poor sensitive woobie who needs people to love him. I mean look at 'Brotherhood' he didn't even notice when that woman was clearly hitting on him and was completely out of his depth on knowing what to do about it when the other's informed him. He was soo cute in that episode.

Up to my ears in work at present so it might be a week before I can get to them. Don't ya just hate when work interferes with McKay/Hewlett watching...?!
I'll be watching Treed Murray on Thursday and just got Cypher today. Haven't got Foolproof yet though.

I know what you mean about the pain of waiting! Treed Murray has been taunting me for over a week now.

Good tip re the ordering, but unfortunately no-one I know is into sci-fi or David Hewlett, oh they SO don't know what they're missing, but might try to get a few folk interested in er just browsing amazon and see if they want to order anything...
You know (not to rub it in lol) the *weirdest* thing happened to me at uni yesterday.

I'm in my film & tv class and we're off in our groups using the cameras, when one of the girls in my group notices my necklace (I have a silver necklace with the earth POO symbol as a pendant). She goes 'is that what I think it is??' and I go "yup. do you watch too?' and she went 'YES!'.

Was so bizarre because not only is she a major sg1 fan, but she's one of the few Australians who have seen all of Atlantis too!

And she's a huge DH fan, and also a McShepper. AND she has a bunch of friends who are also all McSheppers/DH fans and they all get together once a week to watch stuff.

We geeked out soooo badly and got the strangest looks from the rest of our group hehe.

But it was such a weird thing to happen.

So cool though cause now I get to meet some RL people who share my obsession lol.

So clearly everybody needs to start wearing an item of clothing that advertises your geekiness...we SG fans need a way of identifying each other lol. If it wasn't for my necklace, we may never have known lol.

I wish that could happen to me.

I infact had an odd idea of studying SG online fandom for sociology project (then maybe time here would be justified somehow) but no one semed to, including the lecturer, had even heard of the show... he thought I meant Star Trek! and I got such weird looks!

Though the idea wasn't bad I went with another - that's the essay I have to start next week too (3000 words in one week, eugh, so little time to watch those films amongst that!)

What could we wear...what's oh so McKay like - apart from maybe a Zed.p.m charm/keyring...

Oh and where can you buy the pendants from? I'd like a Pegasus galaxy symbol one - no clue what it looks like (probably need a cap of Daniel scribbling on that whiteboard from Rising) but just so Atlantis fans could identify each other!

I actually work with a bunch of people who love Stargate. Some of the people I work with are quick to make a joke out of me being a sci-fi fan but as soon as it got out that I'd travelled to Gatecon and met some of the actors and loved both SG1 and Atlantis I was quick to find out that there are a whole group of us in the store that love the show though I seem to be the msot hardcore fan. I'm one of two women who like it, all the others are guys. Unfortunately that means I don't really have anyone to talk to about my appreciation for the thunkworthy David Hewlett. Even though my best friend loves the show she's not that big a McKay fan so I'm so grateful for this thread! Love you guys!

Count me among the lucky too. My best local friend loves SG1 and she darn near died when I showed her the "Raining Men" video for Atlantis. I think she has her box-set preordered already.

My best 'faraway' friend I gained through another fandom, so she is used to waxing enthusiastic and poetic and thunk-etic (I think I just made up a word) about shows. She is also already a sci-fi geek, so ... I am slowly convincing her of the wonder that is Stargate. If I seem to be reccing all David movies to her too, well, what can it really harm?

My other friends indulge my obsession with arm porn.

                            Such good friends. *nods*

                              Help!

I've always been a McKay fan but lately I've realized I'm becoming a real fan of David Hewlett's as well. And I want to see more of his non-McKay work!

I'm looking for recommendations on some of his better movies to order on DVD. I tried to watch those movies that aired on scifi - Boa vs Python and Darklight and those just aren't my thing.

So those of you who've seen his movies - any recs? I like good dramas, don't mind edgy, different stuff. Just not too gross or cheesy. I want to enjoy the movie too, ya know.

Thanks! My Amazon account is waiting to get charged up!

P.S. - yes I know I could wade back thru this whole thread and maybe see some movies mentioned but I'm feeling really lazy tonight.

Treed Murray is a must if you like edgy and different. Canadian movie, made for TMN, but somehow terribly good despite that.

Nothing is one of the funniest things I've seen in a long time.

Cube is a fascinating film with some gross moments.

Both Nothing and Cube were directed by Vincenzo Natali, a longtime friend of DH and a man with a finely honed sense of the absurd. I recommend them very highly, and not just for the thunkage, although that is great too.

Hope that helps get you started.
