Thanks Raven
I liked him in S1, when he had the "scientific" tac vest on his blue shirt. He looked different from the others in the team but showed that he is a scientist as well. I love gun porn but how he now wears the same as the others now and that he has P-90 a lot, it´s weird. But also, very cool I don´t know...so much has changed since S1 and everything not in a good way.
But David is still sexy as he used to be so at least something is the same

The original tan and blue science uniform also made him look younger and more vulnerable as well. I don't think they ever explained the change to the gray on the show, but in my mind, the reason was that Sheppard required Rodney to wear the gray in the field, so he would not stand out among the other team members as a target to be shot.
I think it was important for Rodney to progress to a level of capability where he is able to carry a P-90 and support the team defense, but like you, I miss when he was just the vulnerable scientist carrying only the sidearm, who had to be protected. This also led to lots of great fanfic where Sheppard teaches McKay to shoot, and Ronon and Teyla teach him to fight.
Sigh. I can't believe the series will be finished shooting (filming) forever very soon. It has come so very far and is so very good. Rodney's character has had an amazing journey over the five years.
