You are right that he doesn't look that tall, but if you look closely you can tell he has a really long torso and long legs.

I always thought that David had a much wider/rounder face and he's more blondish... But he is pretty cool as well... an excellent actor but a little wasted in LOTR (ie they didn't use him enough)
