I talked about this with my boyfriend last nite. He's finalising his thesis from biology. Apparently all depends how one define sentience. There is all bunch of the different definition of the term and of course, depends how you define the term about are insect sentient or not. There are definitions of the sentience (from wikipedia- ability to feel and perceive) that make any multiple cell organism sentient.

Yes, I'm aware of that, and also the religious implications, but I prefer to think of sentience as the ability to have a perception that exceeds those parameters.

I'm confused. In order for a mutation to survive one has to have either environmental influence that will remove the "competition" or small enough choice of the breeding partners so that mutation get fixed within few generations.
At the moment we, as a specie, are successfully removing majority of the environmental influences and also have access to much bigger choice of the breeding partners than ever before in our history. Those are 2 main points on which I based the statement that we stopped evolving as a specie.

How? I just told you that one can choose any partner they like, and medical care and technology protects us at the moment from deadly environmental influences. So how we are evolving now?

So you don't think that present environmental factors could be influencing evolution as we speak? And we do live in an environment, largely of our own making, true, so logic dictates that it should have an effect. Don't forget that evolution occurs over millennia, and not in the space of centuries - you have to factor in the life span of the organism with regard to generational effects. Plus most mutations are generally very small. Not only that, but the majority of changes to a genome are generally incompatible to life.

Yes, evolution can be forced. Take African elephants, who have been hunted for their tusks for generations. Because of this the gene for large tusks is disappearing from the gene pool, so in this respect you could say technology is driving it far faster than nature would have. Isn't it possible that tech could do the same for us? The very fact we have this tech is making a difference, and its why I believe evolution is still happening.

On the subject of the evolving, back to the Wraith. What do you think how it is possible for an specie to evolve if they do not have limited life-span?

Personally, I believe the Wraith evolved like any other species, and were not the specialised feeders we see on the show. I'll swallow that they absorbed DNA just to go with the flow, and somehow this allowed them to become part hominid. Anyhoo, once we get past the general silliness, I also think they engineered themselves to become specialist feeders, and use their technology to continue to assist their evolution.

The one on the right looks like the thumb rings worn by Steve, Jimmy and various warriors in season one. The other ring is unfamiliar to me - I don't recall seeing any Wraith wearing one like it.

It's possible it doesn't belong to a Wraith at all. After all, they mislabelled the Todd costume I bought, indicating it was from 'Allies', when we all know full well it's the 'Common Ground' cossie. I'm still in shock they didn't realise what they'd done, as I'm certain if it had been auctioned correctly it would have raised a helluva lot more dosh. Not that I'm complaining, you understand.
