It's funny how secondary characters seemed to of thrived on Atlantis then they ever did in SG-1 (with the exception of Fraiser).

Television portrayer Kavan Smith
First appearance Enemy Mine
Major Lorne is an Air Force officer played by Kavan Smith in the television series Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis, where he has become a recurring character in season 2.
Spoiler:
Major Lorne first appeared in SG-1's season 7 episode "Enemy Mine". He served in SG-11 under Colonel Edwards at the naquadah dig site on P3X-403. When the site got attacked by the native Unas, only Dr. Jackson's intervention prevented a blood bath.
Lorne reapeared some time later in Atlantis, as part of the new personnel send in season 2 by the Daedalus. He was investigating planet P3M-736 with Dr. Parrish when they discovered a Wraith corpse. After it was confirmed Lt. Ford was in the planet, Lorne was one of the officers chosen by Col. Sheppard to track him down. He was partnered with Dr. McKay, whose doom attitude he ignored. Lorne told McKay he really should be a genius if Sheppard had not shoot him already. He was knocked down with a Wraith stunner by Ford, who took McKay with him. Lorne recovered and returned to the Puddle Jumper ("Runner").
After Col. Sheppard's team failed to return from Olesia, Dr. Elizabeth Weir ordered him to assemble a team to go and assist them. He piloted the Puddle Jumper, proving that he has the ATA gene. He and two marines escorted Dr. Weir to Olesia ("Condemned").

No offense, but I think I know why they got rid of Ford. But I'll keep it to myself. You FORDs would blow up on me. Although, I really don't have anything against him. Yet, I cower at your...so organized....ways....*mezmorized look*
And yes I agree with you that Lorne isn't replacing anyone. He is just a great new addition to Atlantis!!

Mmmmmm nekkid Lorne........
Wha? O, sorry, the mind drifted - a lot!
Originally posted by purpletoo1FF, you should read or listen to the writers interviews here on GW for answers to why Ford is scarce this season. They did not get rid of him. But this is not the thread to go into a discusion on Ford.
Now returning to the previous daydream. Lets see, where was I? Oh, right, nekkid Lorne .
FFDo not meddle in the affairs of fraggles for there is nothing quite as irritating as being pestered to death by small, bouncy, fuzzy creatures!

Com.
And, anyway, call me lazy, but I prefer to speculate on my own time. I don't like reading interviews...
