Actually come to think of it, since Atlantis is on Earth, O'Neill has no reason to allow Daniel a permanent assignment on Atlantis. As a former ascended he has a greater understanding of the ancients than anybody.

Even so, when Repli-Carter had him in that device on her ship she was able to probe his subconscious and find the weapon on Dakara. While I might've implied that Daniel may or may not have retained knowledge of the ancients, he's had more experience with them than anybody. He has a better understanding of the language than most people, anyway. As a civilian member of the SGC he really has noone to answer to, and has no obligations to any organization so he'd be the most likely candidate to be solely committed to interpreting the database and finding new technologies the monkeys at Area 51 to play with.

Speaking of which, since Atlantis is on Earth why don't they just fire up the hyperdrive engines again and pick off the alliance one system at a time? Better yet, find some way to set a trap for them and get a big fleet of their ships in one place and use the Atlantis drones to blow them up. It's not like they have any weapons capable of defeating Atlantis's defenses.

It's not my "one-track mind" you have to worry about. The mandate of the SG program from the moment Apophis and his jaffa came to the SGC, our mission was to procure weapons and technology to protect this planet. With Atlantis we have that and more.
