The writers don't want to expend the effort implementing it into combat situations. Basically they just write the standard;

SHEPPARD: Oh no, I guess we are trapped in hvie ship agian!!

Beckett should start making it more powerful and somehow find a way to use it against the wraith but at the same time provide a certain rebellious wraith with the means to destroy millions of people which ends with Sheppard standing before 3 noobs who are pointing fingers. Haha.
