Joe Mallozzi said that they CAN...but that they will not be sustained by them. In other words, they can suck on an animal, but it wouldn't give them nutrition and strength. It would be like if we ate nothing but candy - it might give us a short burst of energy, but eventually it would make us weak, we'd get sick...and we'd die.

If it was possible for them to feed on a large animal, they would have fed Steve and Todd such animals while in captivity. But, alas, only human life force sustains them - much like nectar sustains a butterfly.
