Actually hippo(s) isn't Latin, it's (ancient) Greek. Now, we know that ancient languages are related to Ancient, so I came up with this:
    -"hippo(s)", noun: horse
-"for-", root of the verb "ferein": to bear, to carry
    -"alkaios", adjective: powerful, brave, strong
If you put those together, you get something like: "He who has the strength/bravery to carry a horse" or "He who bears the strength of a horse"?
I don't know, but he doesn't seem to be the kind of guy you want to pick a fight with.
Perhaps it instead means the horse who is strong to carry everyone.

Perhaps he was in command of the Ancient defensive forces?
Possibly, if his name is supposed to say something about his personality. However people tend to get names before they develop a personality. It could say something about Hippo’s parents though.

Maybe, but I miss the “everyone” in Hippo-for-alkus.

Anyway, I wondered if I would find similar explanations (in Latin/Greek) for other Lantian names. Looked it up and this is the rather surprising result:
      - Ganos Lal (a.k.a. Morgan Le Fay)
      > “Ganos”, noun: brilliance, joy, beauty, pride
      > “Lal(os, è, on)”, adjective: (annoyingly) talkative
The first part I could understand, but she didn’t strike me as the blabbering type.

      - Moros (a.k.a. Myrrdin, a.k.a. Merlin)
There are two words in ancient Greek which can be linked with his name, depending on how you pronounce the first ‘o’.
      > "Moros" (omicron, short sound), noun: the human ‘part’ > fate; also (violent) death, doom
      > "Móros" (omega, long sound), adjective: blunt, dumb, foolish; when used as a noun: idiot, fool.
Makes you think how the ancient Greeks felt about the smart guy with the magic touch.

I really doubt TPTB intended all this, so it's funny how coincidence/serendipity takes a swing at things.

I like Orion. It's one of the constellations I can always find.
