I am sure there is probably already a thread about this but I am too lazy to search. After sinking the city and leaving through the gate, how come no one ever decided to go back? They were obviously around for a long time if Merlin was one. So why not go back, I would think they would no that over time the wraith would not still be sitting around the planet.

Not all of them as we know that at least Merlin was around for some time which means there may have been others. Unless Merlin was born on Earth and was never told about Atlantis or that it still existed."Those who sow the wind might reap the whirlwind."

It's a good question vonbismark, I simply think that once they had ascended there was no need for them to go back. Judging by the way they refuse to interfere in corporeal matters anymore, they have no reason to and they just don't care. Selfish? arrogant? maybe.
I have bandied around a theory on other threads that the Ancients (now being ascended) have knowledge that goes way beyond any kind of understanding and comprehension we have. They might exactly know the way the universe with all it's problems and wonders is gonna turn out in the future. Or it could be they simply have faith in us to do the right thing and then everything else with take care of itself.

I think the Ancients could have made Atlantis Goa'uld/Jaffa proof or made it secure from anybody or anything getting inside if the wanted to. I think the Ancients motivation was for us to have the knowledge and where with all to make the journey to the Pegasus galaxy. Although it could have been the fact that they did'nt want to lead the Wraith to our galaxy so they hid it in Pegasus?. So many possibilities and theories we could bandy about!.

They didn't return because they still hadn't found a solution. What's the point of going back if you don't have a comprehensive solution to the Wraith? They'd be in the same situation as before; the situation we're now in, except they probably had even less people to run the city continuously and there only reason, unlike us, for being there would be to kill the Wraith, not exactly a noble and inspiring thought.
They probably had a choice, hang around the Milky Way and think up a solution that would allow them to go back or continue on the path they'd probably been focused on before they came across the Wraith, and ascend.... which you can't do if you're still worrying about the Wraith.
Add to that, the fact that if they went back, they would be messing with an established future/past. They knew that Weir and her team were going to eventually visit the city 10,000 years later. If they went back before that, they'd alter the future and their own past? wierd.
